His Friend Slacked Off On A Group Project, So When He Wouldn’t Redo It With Just Her, She Was Furious He Left

Some friendships work great outside the classroom but fall apart completely the moment real responsibility gets involved.
One college student found himself grouped with a friend notorious for putting in minimal effort, someone who’d previously let another teammate handle her entire share of coding work without raising a single finger.
So when he began to consider the possibility of covering her workload solo, he decided to opt out and join a different thesis group behind her back.
The moment the truth came out, she pushed back hard, demanding to know why he hadn’t asked her first before making the move.
What seemed like a reasonable academic decision quickly spiraled into a much larger conflict about their friendship.

AITA for leaving my friend out to join another group for thesis project?
So I’m a uni student, and for one of my courses I have to choose between a thesis or a project (app making, basically).
But he begins to resent the friend he’s paired up with.
The person I’m friends with is not at all serious about university and is basically a free rider and extremely entitled.
The last time we did a project with her, my other group member did her entire coding part.
He worries he’ll be forced to do all of the work.
This time that other team member left us, and now it’s basically her and me, and I don’t want to take this big of a load all alone and teach her stuff she should already know.
That’s when he decided he needed to take matters into his own hands.
And I wanted to do thesis as well, so I joined a group who’s doing thesis without asking her. It’s not official though, because we haven’t submitted our names yet.
But when he told his friend his plans, she wasn’t happy at all.
Right after joining this group, I texted her saying that I have joined a group (I don’t need her permission, cause we are adults, for god’s sake), and she, as I expected, got mad.
She was saying why I didn’t ask her before joining another group.
AITA?
This student is being forced to choose between his grades and his friendship.

His friend just immediately proved why he made the right decision leaving her behind.

Maybe it’s best to keep as much academic separation between them as possible.

His education should come first.

Demanding permission to join a separate group is a wild move from someone who’s never actually pulled her own weight in the first place.
At the end of the day, this student didn’t owe her a heads-up; he owed himself a grade that doesn’t depend on covering for a teammate who lets other people do all her work for her.
Group work is designed to be done as an actual group.
