Earlier today, workers erected steel columns that made the unfinished frame of the new One World Trade Center the tallest building in New York City, eclipsing the Empire State Building.

The current height of 1 WTC stands just over 1,250 ft (381 meters), but it will stand at 1,368 feet (417 meters) when the building is complete. A 408-foot-tall (124 m) antenna spire will also sit on the roof, taking the overall height of 1 WTC to 1,776 ft (541 m). Not including the antenna, it will be the second-highest building in the United States after the Willis Tower in Chicago.

Completed in 1931, the Empire State Building was the tallest free-standing structure in the world until 1967 (when Moscow’s Ostankino Tower was completed), and lost its status as New York City’s tallest building when the original World Trade Center (at 1,368 feet high, plus a 359-foot antenna) was completed in 1972.
