I (34M) teach high school math.

At Thanksgiving, my nephew Miles (12) was finishing a pre-algebra worksheet before dinner.

I was setting the table nearby, glanced over, and saw he’d made the same order-of-operations mistake on four problems.

I pointed it out, showed him the fix, and took thirty seconds.

This man was called out by his brother, saying he shouldn’t teach Miles with his homework.

My brother Dale (37M) noticed and told me to let Miles do his own work.

I said I was just flagging a real mistake, not doing it for him.

It was better to catch it now than on a test.

Dale said it wasn’t my place, and Miles has a teacher for that.

I mostly backed off.

Miles approached him and asked a question.

But a few minutes later, Miles quietly asked if another problem looked right.

I checked it and told him. Dale saw and got annoyed.

He said, “I told you to stop,” in front of everyone.

It was kind of embarrassing at the table.

His brother blamed him for undermining him as a parent.

I told him I wasn’t going to ignore his kid asking me a direct question just to prove a point.

Dale says I undermined him as a parent, especially by not fully stopping after he’d already said something.

We haven’t really talked since. AITA for helping again after Miles asked me himself?

I don’t think helping a child understand a math problem is the same as doing the work for them.
