He Wants to Sink Thousands More Into Their Broken Camper Van for “Memories”—She Wants to Cut Their Losses and Sell It

Getting rid of an old vehicle can be difficult, especially if it has sentimental value.
The following story involves a woman who wanted to sell the camper van that she and her partner bought and owned together.
The van had already required expensive repairs, and the latest breakdown could cost another €4,000 to €5,000.
But her partner was emotionally attached to it and wanted to have it fixed, so a huge disagreement ensued.

AITA for wanting to sell our shared camper van instead of paying for expensive repairs?
About 5 years ago, my partner (34F) and I (34F) bought a Volkswagen Transporter T5 camper van together, split 50/50.
It cost us around €12,500 total.
Since then, it’s had its share of problems, including a break-in that cost us money to fix the windows.
There was also a separate mechanical failure that cost around €2,000 to repair.
Now, the van has broken down again, and this repair would cost a minimum of €4,000, possibly up to €5,000.
This woman uses her own car, and her partner uses the camper van daily.
For context, I have my own car, which I pay for entirely by myself, including fuel, maintenance, repairs, everything.
If my car ever broke down for good, I’d have to cover the cost of a replacement entirely on my own.
There would be no help from my partner.
The van, on the other hand, is used by my partner as her daily driver.
I personally only use it 2 to 3 times a year for camping trips.
She also owns a motorcycle that she rides occasionally, which she could sell for about €3,000 if she wanted to.
She didn’t want to have the van repaired again.
My opinion is that I don’t want to repair the van.
The repair costs are getting disproportionate compared to what we paid for it.
There’s no guarantee something else won’t break down again soon after.
On top of that, we’re currently saving up to buy land together and build a house.
I want to save as much money as possible for that, and to have a cushion in case my own car breaks down.
She suggested that they sell the van instead.
I proposed selling the van and using that money for her to buy a small, practical car instead.
If there’s a gap, she could sell the motorcycle she barely uses to cover the difference.
She disagrees. She thinks we should pay for the repair.
She says she has an emotional attachment to the van and doesn’t want to let it go.
Since she’s used it daily for years and has a lot of memories tied to it.
This has been causing repeated arguments between us, and neither of us is backing down.
So, AITA for wanting to sell the van instead of repairing it?

I think OP is simply being practical.
She saw another €4,000 repair as a major financial decision that they may not be able to afford.
Plus, if she wasn’t using it very often, perhaps she shouldn’t spend a lot of cash on it.
