Her Daughter’s Boyfriend Kept Disrespecting Table Etiquette—So She Considered Banning Him From Family Dinners

Food etiquette can become a serious issue when it leads to waste.
The following story is about a woman who was frustrated with her daughter’s boyfriend, who refused to eat in front of others.
Despite ordering full meals or taking full plates, he would only push food around and eventually throw it away.
The repeated waste at restaurants and home dinners began to upset her more and more.
Let’s take a closer look!
WIBTA for asking my daughter’s boyfriend to stop having dinner with us?
My daughter (21F) has been dating this guy (24M) for 2 years. It is fairly serious.
He is from Mexico and has been in the U.S. since he was 3 years old.
He has a strange phobia of not wanting anyone to see him eat. And it is real.
I have literally never seen this kid put a bite of food in his mouth despite spending a fair amount of time around him.
This woman noticed how her daughter’s boyfriend behaved at the table with his food.
He is thin. But he does not look unhealthy.
The problem is that we take them out to dinner occasionally for holidays or special occasions.
He always orders a full meall, cuts up the food, and pushes it around on the plate.
But he does not eat any of it. Then after the meal, he will “donate his leftovers” to someone else.
She thought he’s wasting a lot of food by doing what he does.
It is even worse when I make home-cooked meals and they come to dinner.
He does the same thing. He takes a full plate of food, cuts it up, and pushes it around.
He makes it look messed with. But he does not eat any of it.
Then, he will scrape all the food into the trash can afterwards.
I am starting to get enraged over this. He wastes a horrendous amount of food.
Even the waiters thought there was something wrong with the food.
I cannot stand the money wasted when we buy him expensive restaurant meals.
They go completely uneaten. It has even caused a few scenes with waiters.
They ask him what is wrong and if they need to change his order.
I have talked to my daughter privately. I said, “If he does not want to eat, that is fine.
Just tell him to stop taking plates of food and ordering in restaurants.”
Her daughter refused to confront her boyfriend about this.
Her response was:
“But in his culture, it is rude for him to not take food. I am not asking him to do that.”
But I find it so rude that he is willing to keep wasting our money. Food is not cheap.
WIBTA for just announcing that he is no longer invited to meals?

Yikes! That sounds like a real issue to deal with.
While his discomfort around eating seems real, the constant food waste and expense understandably can be frustrating.
OP’s reaction is justified because who wants to see the food they pay for get thrown in the trash, right?
