AITA for reserving my neighbour’s parking spot?

“I moved in to an apartment this weekend. They told me they had a parking spot reserved for me if I wanted it.

They have reserved spots that cost $20/month, and they have “permit” spots that all residents can park in.

I declined the reserved spot, and figured if they had it saved for me, it was probably not being used.

What was this all about?

I parked there, and at midnight on my first night, my neighbour was honking excessively outside and then rang my doorbell telling me I was in his spot.

I drove around the parking lot to find a “permit” spot.

Turns out, all the permit spots are on the complete opposite end of the complex and it’s quite a walk. I figured it’s worth the $20/month even if just for the safety reason of having visibility of my car.

I’ll take that!

I contacted my landlord today and reserved the spot in front of my unit that my neighbour has been using for free.

I understand my neighbour has probably been using that spot for a while, but I also feel like he should’ve expected this to happen eventually.

I am paying for it after all, and he is not, but it doesn’t seem like the best first impression.
