She Started Driving Her Daughter to Work as a Favor—But Her Entitled Attitude Made Her Rethink Everything

Transportation costs are often the largest part of what eats up the average person’s budget. Though while this is a nearly universal problem, some people aren’t nearly as empathetic to others’ plights as they should be.

How would you handle your nearly 30-year-old child destroying their car and then completely relying on you to get to and from work? Would you be willing to help them out or expect them to figure it out on their own?

One woman who finds herself in this situation recently aired her grievances on Reddit. Here’s what she said.

AITA for wanting my 27yr old to get themselves to work?

Daughter is 27yrs old, blew the engine in her car after a year of me telling her to put oil in it, and now I am her taxi to work and back.

I have been driving her for a year now.

She decided that rather than fix the car she already owns, she wants to buy a new car.

Doesn’t seem like the most efficient quick fix.

A $45k Kia that is like a unicorn of a car in the specific model, color, engine package etc. she wants.

She will also need to put down $8k on this car with an $850 payment.

I think it’s a dumb way to throw away enough money to buy a house with, but what do I know.

There are without a doubt more options on the table here.

I am TIRED.

I work 9-5 M-F.

Every single weekend I’m up getting her early in the morning, messing up my entire sleep schedule and day.

This enabling has gotten out of control.

Last night she wanted me to pick her up at 11:30pm.

I tried, real hard, to stay up until that time.

I couldn’t.

Most human beings could not.

When I woke up to go get her it felt like I was drunk, but it was just me being so so tired.

We drove home mostly in silence until she asked me had I fallen asleep.

I said I did, that I tried to stay up but couldn’t. That I really hope she buys ANY car soon so I can get a break from this, because at the end of the week I am worn out and then have to go back to my job M-F.

This upset her, she cut me off an talked over me and told me she tries to be mindful of my sleep and will usually push through until 5pm because she doesn’t want to wake me up.

Yeah, that’s not the flex the daughter thinks it is.

I had had enough.

I stopped the car in the middle of the road.

In park, we sat there for a good 15mins before she finally asked me why we were sitting there.

I said, “If you had the patience to wait all this time to ask me that, why can’t you let me finish talking before you talk over me with what you have to say?”

A little dramatic, but hopefully it got the point across.

Then, silence until we got home.

Each interaction like this feels like it puts distance between us.

I don’t have a problem picking her up, I do have a problem being expected to do things as if she were 12yrs going to soccer practice instead of 27yrs old going to work.

Am I the AH for trying to set grown up boundaries?

Sounds like this 27-year-old kiddo needs a stark reality check. Let’s see if the Reddit community agreed.

Most were baffled by the absurdity of the situation.
