Sometimes love doesn’t end with closure- but rather, it ends with words you wish you could take back. Breaking up is never easy, but it definitely doesn’t always need to be this hard.

How would you handle a partner that simply could not emotionally handle you ending things? One guy recently shared a cringeworthy story about his own situation with Reddit. Here’s what went down.

AITAH for saying hateful things to my ex after we broke up?

I (18M) and my ex (18F) dated for about 9 months and broke up two weeks ago.

The relationship had been very emotionally difficult for me, and I’m still trying to process everything that happened.

Throughout the relationship, I often felt belittled, insulted, and pressured, especially around intimacy.

There’s never an excuse for that kind of behavior.

I also ended up taking on the role of being responsible for her emotional stability.

I didn’t really stand up for myself because I was afraid she would leave me.

In almost every argument, she would say things like “I want to break up,” which made me scared to express how I felt or set boundaries.

Sounds par for the course when 18-year-olds argue.

She struggles with Borderline Personality Disorder, dissociation, and other issues, but she hasn’t received professional help or treatment.

I tried to support her through it and became more of a caretaker in the relationship.

Back in January, we even had a breakup that lasted two days before getting back together after she was in a car accident, and I stayed with her in the hospital and supported her through that.

That’s a brutal event to go through with someone.

After that, I tried to set more boundaries.

One weekend when I went over to her house, I was helping her with things and being supportive.

However, things escalated when she became intimate with me.

Doesn’t sound like she’s great at reading the room.

She undressed herself and tried to undress me even though I repeatedly said no.

I eventually felt pressured and gave in.

Afterward, she broke down, apologized, and felt guilty, but similar situations and physical boundary issues continued over time on both sides.

Yikes, these two sound pretty ill-suited for each other.

There were also times she was physically rough with me, and I felt uncomfortable, but I didn’t speak up because I was afraid it would upset her or make her leave.

Things finally ended after a disagreement on April 27th, when she ghosted me for three days and then messaged me around 2 AM saying she wanted to break up.

She said the relationship wasn’t normal and mentioned she should have ended things back in January.

She may be right, but text wasn’t the way to do that.

I felt overwhelmed and hurt, especially because it felt like all the effort I had put in over the months didn’t matter.

I reacted badly and started begging her to talk things through.

I even brought her flowers at college to try to have a calm conversation, but she shut me down.

There’s little else he can do at that point.

I kept pushing for answers, and eventually campus police were called.

The officer spoke to me and let me go.

Over the next two weeks, I kept replaying the relationship in my head and started feeling a lot of resentment.

Fair enough, and he has to processes that on his own time.

Out of impulse, I sent her messages expressing my feelings, including anger and frustration, and I regret how I worded some of it.

I probably should have handled it better or not sent it at all.

A couple of days later, I received a message from her best friend insulting me and my mom and calling me names.

Hmm, definitely seems like some context is missing here.

I responded out of anger, saying she was enabling my ex’s behavior and that she should reflect on herself as well.

That led to more insults being exchanged.

There was no easy road out of this one.

Now I just feel conflicted.

Part of me feels relieved that I finally expressed months of built-up emotions, but I also feel guilty about how everything ended and how I handled the aftermath. AITA?

Ah, the trials and tribulations of young love. Let’s see if the good people of Reddit had anything wise to offer up on this.

The comments section was not having any of it.

And called the OP’s narrative out immediately.

Another tried to put the whole thing into perspective.

But ultimately, tough love seemed to be the only cure offered.

They both could teach each other a lot about boundaries…very far away from each other…
