There’s a lot of joy in getting a bargain. Particularly int his economy, everything is just getting more and more expensive, while wages are trailing behind. This means less disposable income, and more bargain hunting in order to make ends meet. Because when getting a treat at full price is too expensive, finding a treat on offer feels like a real win.

The grocery store worker in this story is used to working with all different kinds of customer, even though checkout isn’t even his actual job. But needs must in a business and every time he gets called over to the checkout, he’s more than happy to help customers out. And that includes with discounts and sales, as his patience with a shopper recently shows. Unfortunately the shopper was less interested in being helped and more interested in making a scene.

Read on to find out what happened here.

“That turkey is TOO EXPENSIVE! I guess my family will just have to starve.”

So I work at a large supermarket chain in the Midwest and I don’t cashier as my main job.

It gets busy up front a lot and I work in electronics and the photo lab but get called up a lot to help run lane.

Well, we have a sale going where you spend a certain amount of money and get a turkey for 50% off.

Recently, a customer I was serving spent around $10 under the required amount to apply the discount, so the regular price of the huge turkey was about $52.

Let’s see what happened with the customer.

She asked me if she spent enough, and I told her she was about $10 under and offered to suspend the transaction to see if she wanted to go find $10 more of merchandise.

But instead she said, “OH MY GOD 52 DOLLARS FOR A TURKEY?! THAT’S OUTRAGEOUS! I guess my family will just starve!”

I apologized with my regular old cheerful retail voice. She could have always bought one of our smaller sized turkeys as well.

She then gathered her groceries and left, but forgot her milk due to the complaining – she was too concerned to see the milk in front of her face.

And that wasn’t the end of the drama.

I was too busy calling for someone to come get the turkey so it doesn’t spoil and didn’t notice the milk sitting there until it was too late.

She came back to the service desk where I was at talking to one of the desk workers and whined her legs hurt and that it was so cold outside.

She also complained about the turkey to the service desk team member in an attempt to get me in trouble most likely.

One of my many interesting experiences at my job on the daily.

Some people just seem to live to be dramatic.

This woman made a mistake in not spending enough to get the discount, and the checkout operator was more than reasonable in offering to suspend the transaction while she went to collect an extra $10 worth of produce.

But no, she had to cause a scene instead.

Let’s see what folks on Reddit had to say about this.

This person was also shocked about the full price of the turkey.

And other folk who work at the same store agreed that the promotion is annoying to have to deal with.

Meanwhile, this Redditor had more questions on their mind.

Let’s be real, the turkey is pretty expensive. But of course it is, that’s what makes the deal look so enticing, and it’s how the store still makes money. Folk forget that retail is all about profits, and these deals aren’t about doing the customer a favour. We customers just have to play into them to get the best value for money that we can, but really we’re all just at the mercy of the prices that stores choose to charge.

Regardless though, that wasn’t this staff member’s fault, and he did his best to help the customer out. Instead all he got was yelled at and the woman trying to make a complaint about him down the line. He offered to suspend the transaction to give her more time, and was totally polite and helpful to her throughout. So the fact that she tried to guilt trip him, and complain about him, makes this all the more unfair. If you’ve got a problem, take it up with the company.
