Setting a deadline seems simple enough until someone decides it doesn’t apply to them.

One woman took charge of organizing a small group outing, making it clear that everyone needed to confirm their RSVPs by Friday so she could give the restaurant an accurate headcount, with a direct warning that anyone who missed the deadline couldn’t be guaranteed a spot.

One friend ignored the request, never responding at all, only to show up on the day of the event expecting a seat that simply didn’t exist.

When the reservation turned out to be at full capacity, that same friend got upset, insisting she should’ve been included anyway and accusing the organizer of embarrassing her in front of everyone.

You’ll want to keep reading for this one.

AITAH for not letting someone join an outing after they missed the RSVP deadline?

I organized a small outing for a group of friends. Since we needed to make a reservation, I told everyone that they needed to confirm by Friday so I could give the restaurant an accurate number.

I specifically said that if someone didn’t confirm by then, I wouldn’t be able to guarantee them a spot.

This warning clearly wasn’t enough for one of her friends.

One person didn’t respond at all.

On the day of the outing, they showed up anyway and assumed there would be room for them. There wasn’t. The reservation was already at capacity.

That’s when the friend starts turning the blame on everyone else.

They were upset and said I should have just included them because I knew they were probably coming.

I told them that I couldn’t plan around people who hadn’t confirmed, especially after I’d given everyone a deadline.

That’s when this friend got even more defensive.

They said I embarrassed them in front of everyone and that I could have just asked the restaurant to squeeze them in.

I feel bad that they were embarrassed, but I don’t think it’s fair to make everyone else’s plans more difficult because they ignored the deadline.

AITA?

Sounds like this friend really needs to start taking a little more accountability.

What did Reddit think?

This user isn’t a fan of this behavior at all.

This woman clearly lacks self awareness.

Some people really ought to be more ashamed of themselves.

Following your own stated rules isn’t the problem here, ignoring them and expecting no consequences is.

This woman laid out a clear deadline for her friend, explained exactly what missing it would mean, and simply held to that when the situation played out as warned.

Turning around and blaming her for someone else’s lack of communication just doesn’t make any sense.

Reservations have limits for a reason.
