He Blared Extended Late-Night Gaming Calls at 1:00 AM—Then Accused Her of Being “Nagging and Controlling” for Asking Him to Wear Headphones

Thin apartment walls have a way of turning small habits into much bigger problems.
One woman found herself increasingly exhausted after her boyfriend’s late-night habit of taking calls on speakerphone, often after 10pm, started interfering with her ability to sleep and function at work the next day.
She’d already brought it up a few times, only to be told the noise wasn’t really that bad and that late calls were simply the only time he could catch up with family or coworkers across different time zones.
Now she’s considering setting an actual boundary, asking him to switch to headphones or take calls elsewhere after a certain hour, but he’s brushed off the concern entirely, calling her overly sensitive and suggesting she just close the bedroom door instead.

WIBTA if I asked my boyfriend to stop using speakerphone in our apartment after 10pm
I live with my boyfriend, and our apartment has pretty thin walls. He has a habit of taking calls from his mom or work on speaker, usually after 10pm when I’m trying to wind down or sleep.
This is really starting to impact her day-to-day routine.
It keeps me up, and it’s started affecting how rested I feel at my job the next day.
I’ve mentioned it a couple times, but he says it’s the only time he can catch up with people and he doesn’t think it’s that loud.
She thinks she needs to start getting more serious about making her feelings known.
Recently I’ve been thinking about giving him an actual boundary, like asking him to switch to headphones after a certain hour. I get why he does it.
He’s close with his family, and some of his work calls run late because of time zones.
Her boyfriend is quick to defend his behavior.
He says he’s only in the living room, so it’s not directly next to the bedroom, and that I can always close the door if it bothers me.
He thinks I’m being overly sensitive and that it’s not worth changing his routine over something he sees as minor.
She turns to redditors for ideas on how to handle this.
If I sat him down and said I really needed him to switch to earbuds or take calls in another room after 10, would that make me the AH?
I don’t want to police how he talks to people, but I’m also exhausted and don’t know how else to fix it.
This is starting to become quite the problem in this relationship.
What did Reddit have to say?
This commenter doesn’t think this should need to be a difficult conversation for an otherwise loving couple.

There’s a difference between a boundary and a rule.

Her feelings matter whether her boyfriend respects them or not.

There seems to be larger issue at the root here.

Sleep deprivation isn’t a small inconvenience, it’s something that affects nearly every part of daily functioning. And that’s exactly what’s at stake here.
She’s approached this calmly and repeatedly, yet the response has consistently been to downplay her concerns instead of adjusting the behavior causing them.
Needing basic consideration in your own home is a completely reasonable expectation between two people sharing a space — or at least it should be.
A request this small shouldn’t require this much justification to be taken seriously.
