In fact, people are getting downright nasty and belligerent about these disputes. In today’s story, a homeowner explained why he thinks his neighbor is way out of line because of her request for him to remove a tree in his yard.

The problem is that he doesn’t think his tree has anything to do with her issues… Well, this is a real dilemma!

AITA for not wanting to remove my tree after my neighbor’s basement flooded?

“I bought my city row home a little over two years ago, and from the very first day my neighbor has had issues with my property.

The day I moved in, she told me my backyard fence was an eyesore.

She has also complained that my tree drops leaves on to her back patio, saying they’re difficult to blow off.

OP is trying to be a good neighbor.

Even though I didn’t necessarily agree, I recently spent the money to repair and improve the fence about two weeks ago.

Today, after a heavy rain, her basement flooded.

While she was dealing with it, she knocked on my door, handed me a letter, said she was “too emotional to talk” but hoped I would read it, and then walked away before I could respond.

Well, this was gonna be interesting…

The letter says:

“I hope you’re having a great week. I’m writing to ask that you please remove the tree in your backyard, because debris from the tree is creating an ongoing drainage issue on my property.

Flowers, leaves, and small branches from the tree are being carried by water flowing through the alley, into my backyard and down my basement stairs and into the drain at the base of my basement steps.

The drain is located underneath the steps, which makes it difficult and unsafe to reach and clear. When the drain becomes blocked, water collects near my basement door and has caused my basement to flood. Fortunately, I was home today and was able to wade through the water to clear the drain, but this is not a sustainable or safe situation.

Because I cannot control the flow of water from the alley or continue clearing debris before during and after storms, I believe the most effective solution is to remove the tree. I am heading out to get some heaters to dry the basement now. I hope you understand the situation I am facing.”

He’s not buying it.

There are also several mature trees on the other side of her property, but she believes my tree is the one causing the debris that clogs her drain.

I have no way of knowing whether that’s actually true, and nothing has been professionally evaluated.

He wants evidence.

I feel bad that her basement flooded, and I understand that’s stressful.

At the same time, removing a mature tree would be expensive, reduce the value and shade on my property, and I’m not convinced it’s actually the source of the problem.
