Living in an apartment means making reasonable compromises with your neighbors.

The following story is about a woman who moved into a new flat.

But after a few months, she found herself struggling when her upstairs neighbor’s fan caused noisy vibrations that kept her awake.

So, she politely asked if something could be placed underneath it.

But her neighbor became defensive and refused to discuss the issue in person.

Yikes! Talk about an unneighborly neighbor, eh? Let’s take a closer look!

Upstairs neighbour noise

I moved into a new flat a couple of months ago.

My upstairs neighbour is incredibly noisy with stomping.

Which I have learnt I am going to have to live with.

My main issue is she runs a fan all night.

The vibration-humming noise is significant enough that it keeps me awake.

This woman tried to talk to her neighbor about the noise the fan was making.

I went up there at 9 pm, when the fan was running, and knocked on her door.

I politely told her the noise was disturbing my sleep and acknowledged she shouldn’t turn it off because of the heat.

I just asked if she could try putting something underneath to fix it, which it did.

The next night it sounded like she had removed it.

So I went back up to ask if she wouldn’t mind putting it back or if we could find another solution, like anti-vibration pads.

The neighbor got very defensive and told her she wouldn’t do anything about it anymore.

She got very defensive, accused me of basically intimidating her, and was unable to be reasoned with.

She then left me a rude note asking me to only communicate with her in writing.

She basically said she wouldn’t do anything else about the fan.

I’m at a bit of a loss for what to do. I can’t sleep.

She won’t allow me to approach her.

So now, she’s wondering if she was being unreasonable with her request.

It is just a fan, and I don’t expect her to turn it off.

But I thought she’d be more reasonable about the noise.

Am I being unreasonable? What else can I do?

Whoa! The neighbor’s reaction seems much more dramatic than the request itself.

Asking for a simple vibration pad doesn’t sound unreasonable.

OP may need to go through the landlord, as this may be the safest way to handle the issue without creating more tension.
