Let’s be real for a second. Sure, we work our whole lives toward a career that we once aspired to and now is increasingly our norm. And with a bit of luck and a lot of hard work, that career is earning us enough money to support our lives, our families, and some of our dreams. And if you’re in that position, you know you’re the envy of plenty of folk around the world, and feel grateful for it. Because yes, work is hard and work is constant and work is not fun sometimes. But at least we can afford to take vacations and buy nice things and feed and house and clothe ourselves properly when many, many people can only dream of doing that.
But honestly, it can be kind of inconvenient sometimes. And it’s not completely ignoring your privilege to complain a little sometimes about having to work when you’re feeling a little sick or just having an off day, or longing for that vacation time to come. You can know that you are in a fortunate position and still be a bit frustrated one day – you’re human, after all and things can’t always be rosy.
For the teachers in this story, vacation time is precious and booking it far in advance is vital. So of course when she booked her wedding, this teacher booked off her vacation time well ahead of her special day. Unfortunately though one of her colleagues was not so prepared.
Read on to find out what happened to her.
AITA for not giving up my personal day at work for another co-worker?
I (31, female) am getting married in April.
My colleague who I’ll call Meg (29, female) and I both requested the same days off from work. These three days lead up to my wedding day, a Saturday.
Well, my friend requested two these days off for a vacation with her family to Disney.
They already paid for it, and, according to her, cannot get a refund on deposits for where they are staying.
Let’s see how the workplace responded to their leave requests.
Needless to say, her personal days were denied. Mine were not because I requested it before she did, along with a few others.
We are teachers and there’s a cap on how many can take a personal day at a time according to our union contract, especially with the sub shortage in the states.
I mentioned to a group of us that I got my days approved when being asked about wedding stuff.
She asked me later on in private if I could give her my days since my wedding is local and I can work on it after work.
Yikes! Read on to find out how she responded to Meg’s request.
I told her no and that I had lots of planning to do to prepare. She replied that I am being over the top for a wedding and that I’m costing her money.
I told her I like having time to get everything together no matter what the event is. But she said her husband only gets vacation during this time and they cannot reschedule but I really don’t think that’s my problem.
I asked my fiancé about it and he agrees with me but I know he can be biased.
AITA?
This woman rightfully requested leave ahead of her wedding and was granted it, in part because she made the request well ahead of time.
Meg has subsequently decided that she wants the same time off, and paid for her vacation before getting her time off approved.
Now that her request has been denied, she only has herself to blame.
Let’s see what folks on Reddit said to this.

This person thought that the only person in the wrong here was Meg.

While others thought that it wasn’t this bride-to-be’s problem whatsoever.

Meanwhile, this Redditor was shocked that Meg didn’t see what a horrible thing she was asking.

If you’ve not had a big wedding before, maybe you can be forgiven for not understanding quite how much work goes into preparing for it – especially if you are doing a lot of the work yourself. And the truth is, weddings are so expensive nowadays that it’s not uncommon for couples to do a lot of the preparation themselves, even in a wedding that looks high-end, just to save some cash wherever they can. But regardless, in the days leading up to her wedding, it’s understandable that this woman wants to be relaxing and not stressing out at her job.
So it’s no wonder that she completely shot down Meg’s request, because it was totally unreasonable. She had booked time off well in advance of her wedding and was quite within her rights to take it. As for Meg, simply assuming that she’d be able to have the time off and then booking and paying for a nonrefundable vacation without checking was a foolish mistake to make. Now she has potentially lost out on some cash – but she won’t be making that mistake again.
