Apartment living requires a certain amount of tolerance. You’re going to hear the occasional television, footsteps overhead or neighbor who apparently believes vacuuming is a midnight activity. But there’s a difference between accepting a little background noise and waking up to what sounds like a nightclub on the other side of your bedroom wall.

One longtime apartment resident had enjoyed a relatively peaceful existence in their building, where neighbors generally kept to themselves and treated one another respectfully.

That changed when a man who required regular care moved into the studio apartment next door.

At first, there was nothing particularly unusual about the arrangement. The new neighbor wasn’t especially talkative, but the resident didn’t think much of it. Not everyone wants to make friends with the person living next door.

Then, one night before an early work shift, the resident was jolted awake at approximately 2 a.m. by music blasting through the shared wall.

And this wasn’t a brief accidental alarm or someone forgetting to turn down the television.

It was the beginning of a considerably louder neighborly relationship.

Late night music sessions

I have been reading over some of the other posts and it got me thinking of one neighbor I had living next door to me in a apartment complex.

Now this is a section 8 housing where most of us are either disabled, can’t afford some of the newer apartments, etc. so its kind of peaceful as everyone keeps to themselves most of the time or are generally nice to each other.

I had been living here for a number of years and I got along with my neighbors never had many disagreements with anyone really.

Sounds lovely.

Well the neighbor that lived next to me was a disabled person that needed constant care never said anything even when I did say hello or greeted him which I could understand not everyone is chatty.

Well everything seemed normal until one night/morning, I was trying to get some sleep as I had a shift the next day and I wanted to get a good night’s rest.

It was about 2 am in the morning when BAM a stereo on the other side of my bedroom (I live in a studio apartment so did my neighbor) to the max where loud music and I am not saying it was a ring tone or something like that it was full blown sound system.

Sounds…loud.

This jerked me awake confusing me wondering what the heck was going on as I thought it might be a alarm clock but no it continued on without stopping. It would go on for 30 to 40 minutes and I tried knocking on the neighbors door to see if he could turn it off but no one came to the door.

I did file a complaint about the noise because trying to get some sleep and all is important to me.

I couldn’t get back to sleep at all after that point so I stayed up the rest of the day.

There were more incidents not as bad but I would hear music playing from his apartment for hours before being turned off.

Doesn’t sound very respectful.

It turns out this guy had his TV and stereo system setup against the wall on the other side of where my bed was and would get into these screaming matches with his parents who came to visit.

Thankfully he moved out not to long after.

The resident had reasonable grounds to complain about the noise. A stereo blasting at 2 a.m. for 30 to 40 minutes is a significant disruption, particularly for someone who needs to get up for work the following morning.

They also made an effort to address the problem directly before filing a complaint. When knocking on the neighbor’s door produced no response, reporting the disturbance to building management was a reasonable next step.

The neighbor’s disability and need for regular care add some context, but they don’t establish why the music was playing or whether he could have controlled it at that moment. It’s possible there were circumstances the resident wasn’t aware of, which is another reason to let management handle the situation rather than assume the disturbance was intentional.

Unfortunately, the initial incident wasn’t the only problem. The resident describes additional lengthy music sessions and arguments between the neighbor and his visiting parents. Discovering that the stereo was positioned directly against the wall beside their bed probably explained why the sound was particularly intrusive.

The neighbor eventually moved out, bringing the disturbances to an end. But filing a complaint about repeated late-night noise wasn’t an unreasonable response, especially after an unsuccessful attempt to speak with him.
