Isn’t it frustrating when companies offer you a certain rate at hiring but decide to change that after sometime?

This guy shares how his salary was reduced over a random policy at work.

Check out the full story.

Company switching my position salary to hourly.

I’ve been at my company for a little over two years. When I interviewed, it was stated that my salary would be based on an 80 hour pay period with bi-monthly checks.

The system we use to view our paychecks shows my yearly salary, as well as how it translates to an hourly wage at 80 hours.

This is where it gets bad…

About a year into the job, we had a department meeting and were told that we would have to start working 45 hours a week (90 hour pay periods) for the foreseeable future.

While I didn’t love this, I did like the work and culture of the company.

We were able to leave for appointments or if I needed to pick my kids up from school due to illness, etc without any hassle, and were told just told to make the time up.

So far, it had been going fine and had been business as usual since the change to 45 hours.

UH OH…

Fast forward to last week, when some of the folks, myself included, were called into individual meetings with our supervisor and HR.

The meetings were short and mentioned that because of a “routine audit” and to be compliant with new FLSA standards, four of us in the department would now be made hourly, and have to adhere to clocking in and out as well as having 30 mins for lunch automatically deducted from our daily hours.

The main problem I have with this is that my salary was based on 40 hours per week. The new hourly breakdown brings my pay down $4.23 per hour less based on 40 hours.

That’s INSANE!

I met with HR after the meeting and asked them what does this mean for me if we go back to 40 hour weeks, and the answer I got was, “well, we are busy enough that we don’t expect that to happen anytime soon, and we’ll have to explore that if it does happen.”

This is unacceptable to me.

Besides the runaround answer I received with that question, being non-exempt also means that I lose the flexibility that salaried employees in the department will still receive.

He knew they were being unreasonable!

They are sending those of us affected by the switch a “good faith” back payment based on 12 months of work and 1/2 of the hourly wage.

This seems like a shitty payoff for losing the perks of a salaried position.

WHAT? That sounds outrageous!

How can they drastically change the policy like that?

Let’s find out what folks on Reddit think about this one.
