Workplace promotions can sometimes create tension between coworkers who want the same opportunity.
In this story, an employee was promoted from host to server after consistently taking on extra responsibilities at her restaurant.
She had worked as a dishwasher and host, picked up extra shifts, worked holidays, and helped wherever she was needed.
But another host became upset about being passed over and reportedly started calling off whenever she was scheduled to serve.
Check out the full details below.
What to do?
I recently got promoted from host to server at my restaurant.
I started there as a dishwasher, moved to host, got good performance reviews, picked up extra shifts and worked holidays.
I also helped food run, expo, and even covered dishwashing when needed.
Management had me shadow servers and then officially moved me into a server position.
This employee learned that one of her coworkers has been badmouthing her.
The issue is that another host who has been there about 1.5 years is upset that I became a server before her.
I’ve heard from multiple coworkers that she’s been talking crap about me, saying it’s unfair.
And that she’s planning to talk to the GM about it.
“I’m gonna call off on the days he serves because it upsets me,” is what she said.
And so far, that’s something she’s done.
Her coworker thinks she deserved the promotion more.
I came in for my first serving shift while she was the opening host.
And she left 10 minutes after when she wasn’t supposed to clock out yet.
And it was all because she felt like crying and that it upset her.
Mind you, they haven’t moved her to a server because she calls off multiple days a week.
She has no personality with the guest and makes no conversation with them.
Yet she thinks she deserves the position more.
They would also argue about tips.
When I used to host with her, she would get upset whenever I got a generous tip from a to-go order.
She would say, “You’re done taking to-go orders. I need to make my money.”
From what I know, the restaurant was only filling one server spot because a current server is going on maternity leave.
The restaurant is otherwise fully staffed on servers.
She thinks her coworker is being unbearable and difficult.
Is this something I should go to HR about?
It’s just making it unbearable being around her.
And all the other servers feel the same, saying how she’s been ruining the vibe.
Or should I just keep a document of everything?
Whoa! It sounds like the coworker’s frustration has gone beyond simply being disappointed about missing the promotion.
I think OP deserves the promotion because she has proven how serious and dedicated she was at work.
Perhaps she just needs to ignore her coworker and focus on her own responsibilities and goals.

Here’s a valid point.
This one makes sense, too.

Short and simple.
It’s her problem, not yours, says this one.
Some coworkers want the promotion but don’t want to prove that they deserve it.
