Ouch…

The truth sure does hurt sometimes, huh?

Yes, it can be painful to face reality, but it’s all part of life, folks!

And sometimes, those painful lessons can be viewed as teaching moments!

In today’s story, a woman explained how she had to break some bad news to a friend of hers.

Read on and find out what happened.

AITA for telling my friend that none of my friends like him?

“I (21F) have a close friend, Jo, who I’ve known throughout university.

In the first year, one of my housemates started dating him, and because they weren’t very PDA, we naturally became a group of four. We all lived together for the rest of undergrad.

After graduation they broke up, and I moved in with three close friends from my course. Jo decided late to stay for a Master’s degree, but found another house.

My new house started planning a housewarming party. Before we’d finalized anything, I casually mentioned it to Jo because for the past three years my course friends had always invited my entire old house, including him.

There was a problem…

When we made the guest list, my housemates admitted they didn’t want Jo there. They said they’d never actually liked him but had always invited him because he lived with me, and excluding only him would’ve been rude. Since it’s their home too, I accepted that.

I asked why.

They said he’d made insensitive jokes and comments over the years, which offended many of them. What surprised me most was finding out nobody had ever told him he’d upset them.

Instead, my ex-housemate had apparently been apologising on his behalf for years. As far as I know, he’d never been given a chance to apologise or change.

Soon after, Jo made an Instagram group chat with me and my housemates called “Cousins” and suggested we all go to an event.

Nobody replied.

This guy had no idea…

It was obvious he genuinely thought they were close friends, while they only wanted to be polite if they bumped into him.

My housemates didn’t want to spend time with him anymore, but they also didn’t want to tell him why or let me tell him.

She had to be honest with him.

I felt awful watching him keep reaching out to people who wanted nothing to do with him, so when I next saw him I told him they didn’t see him as a close friend. He asked if he’d done something wrong, so I said he’d upset people in the past, but they’d asked me not to give details.

He was devastated and blocked them on Instagram because he felt betrayed. We still meet up one-to-one and he’s doing much better now. I’m also glad this didn’t change our friendship.

My housemates think I should’ve stayed quiet. I disagree.

He was making group chats, organizing plans and being ignored. I felt it was kinder to tell him than let him keep wondering why.

AITA for telling him my friends didn’t actually like him?”

That’s a pretty tough conversation to have with someone, huh?

You can say that again!

But it sounds like it needed to happen.

The truth hurts sometimes…
