She Opened Her Door to Help a Friend and Her Son—Then Was Forced to Evict Them When the Guest Escalated to Total Exploitation

You give some people an inch, and they’ll take a mile from you…

We see these kinds of stories over and over again, and here’s another one for you to chew on!

A woman talked about why she’s had enough of her friend and her son, who she so graciously allowed to move in with her.

Check out why she’s so frustrated with this situation.

AITA for asking an acquaintance and her son to move out less than two weeks after I invited them to stay with me?

“I (38F) recently let “Rachel” (34F) and her son move into my home temporarily.

I barely knew her, which in hindsight was dumb, but they were in a bad situation, I had space, and I wanted to help. I wasn’t charging rent.

This got off to a bad start…

Almost immediately, there were issues with communication and respecting my time.

Rachel wanted to attend a family celebration of life and assumed I’d drive her without asking. I had plans but offered to leave two hours early to take her to someone she could ride with. She declined because she didn’t want to wake up that early and missed it.

Another time, her friend “Mike” stayed over a day longer than planned. I planned to take my daughter to school and then see my boyfriend, but Rachel suddenly told me she needed my car to get Mike home before noon.

I canceled my plans and came home. She then told the person waiting for Mike that she couldn’t access a car until noon, which wasn’t true, and didn’t actually take him home until that evening.

And there’s more…

There were other red flags.

I have a security clearance, and when paperwork required disclosing who lived with me, she suggested I lie to the government about her living there rather than explain things on her record. There were also other questionable events.

The final straw: Rachel borrowed my car overnight and agreed to return it by 7:50 AM so I could take my daughter to gymnastics.

7:50 came. No Rachel, car, or message.

How rude!

For TWO HOURS I called/texted with no response. My boyfriend finally drove me to the friend’s house where she and my car were. The keys were inside, so I told her I was taking my car and left. My daughter missed gymnastics, though thankfully we made her other activities.

Almost immediately afterward, Rachel started responding. She said she’d been sick and someone moved her phone so she couldn’t call.

When I asked why nobody else there contacted me, the story kept changing. First “John” had messaged me. When I asked for a screenshot, he’d forgotten to hit send.

When I pointed out the unsent message should still exist, she said she hadn’t actually asked John directly, she’d asked his kids to tell him. Then Mike was supposed to contact me.

I checked both Facebook accounts, requests, spam, etc. Nothing. Mike eventually messaged me, apparently to corroborate her story, but it really didn’t.

Her friend is just too much to deal with…

For me, this wasn’t about missing gymnastics. Someone I’d housed for free for less than two weeks took my car, knew when I needed it, didn’t return it, and left me stranded without communication. Combined with lies I’d already witnessed, I realized I couldn’t trust her.

I told Rachel she needs to move out. I gave her six weeks to find a job/place. She can ride into town with me when I’m already taking my daughter to school, but she can no longer borrow my car and I won’t make special trips for her.

I feel guilty because she has limited options and her son did nothing wrong. But I have my own child to consider, and I’m uncomfortable living with someone I don’t trust.

AITA?”

Yeah, she’s definitely making the right decision here.

No doubt about it!

She needed to kick this friend to the curb!
