Questions of inheritance and money can cause more fights than just about anything else.
Especially when the concept of “fairness” starts getting thrown around, like in this tale of housing woe.
Imagine having a sibling inherit the family home while another sibling inherits nothing. Is it fair to charge the sibling who inherited nothing rent in order to live in the family home?
Let’s read the whole story to decide.
AITA for evicting my sister after she complained about paying utilities in my inherited house?
i’m 28 and have a sister who’s 24, and she’s done pretty poorly financially since college.
Recently, she asked if she could move into the house my mom left me after she passed.
This was agreed to, with one financial term.
I said yes because, family is family.
However, I asked her to pay $400 a month to help cover utilities and groceries, which is very cheap for our area.
She agreed to pay it.
But little sister is not happy with this arrangement.
Last week, I found out that she has been telling people that I “charge my own sister rent” and making me sound like a greedy landlord.
When I confronted her about it, she said she didn’t think she should have to pay rent because “it’s the family home” and I did not “earn” the house.
She also said she should’ve gotten half the house anyways.
Who “deserves” what, here?
My mom was clear in her will.
She left everything to me because I cared for her for the last three years while she lived across the country.
I let her know that she had thirty days to get a new place to stay.
Now she is staying at our aunt’s place and is telling everybody that I kicked her out over money.
Did I overreact?
Paying rent doesn’t seem too much to ask.
Here’s what the comments had to say on Reddit:

Two can play at the rumor game.

It IS understandable why there would be some resentment, though.

Still, you gotta deal with it.

Kicking her out first thing might have been a little much.
