Landlord Changed the Locks With Almost No Warning—Then Gave Tenants Less Than an Hour to Get New Keys

Some people (and companies) just shouldn’t be in the property management business!
We hear horror stories about this stuff time and time again…and here’s another one for you to chew on!
In today’s story, a person complained about how their apartment building is operated…and it sounds pretty frustrating.
Take a look at what they’re dealing with!
Corporate Landlord changed the lock to our building with 54 minutes notice.
“My corporate landlord changed the locks on all three buildings on property (4 units per building) and texted us at 11:36 am to let us know we could pick up new keys onsite between 12:30 pm-1:00 pm (54 minutes notice).
As far as I know, not a single tenant was able to collect their new key in that time frame.
They sent a text a few hours later saying “sorry we missed you please contact such-and-such to schedule a time tomorrow between 8:00am and 11:00am at (VERY offsite office) to pick up your new keys.”
What?!?!
Effectively they locked tenants out of 12 separate units out of their homes with 54 minutes notice.
Also worth noting, I believe on the same day, they sent an email threatening us with a $200 fine if we don’t shut the gate to our parking spots citing “security concerns” (being penalized for not shutting our gates was not included in the lease).
When I called to let them know I would not be able to pick up a key in person because I’m flying out of town in the morning before that alternative pickup window the person on the phone told me to just prop the building door open if I needed to leave (security concern?).
These people have no idea what they’re doing…
He also propped open the doors to all three buildings at 1:00 pm when he left because nobody was able to collect the new keys to any of the buildings.
My requested solution was for them to mail me my new key so its at least in my mailbox and I’m not locked out of my home when I return from my trip.
I got verbal agreement over the phone and followed up on email so there’s a written record of the request but have yet to receive a response.
I live in Las Vegas. I don’t know if this is illegal or just incredibly bad management but I’ve been stewing about it all day and would like feedback from those who know more about this type of thing than I do.
