Her Friend Promised a Rent-Free Room in Exchange for Splitting Bills—Then Demanded More Money

Offering someone a rent-free place to live is generosity most people would be grateful for. But this story just goes to show that gratitude isn’t always guaranteed.
One woman opened up her home to a friend, asking for nothing more than an even split on shared bills in exchange for free rent.
Four months later, her friend hadn’t paid a single bill or contributed in any meaningful way to the household.
The breaking point came over a concert ticket, the first real ask she’d ever made in return, met with a flat refusal because the tickets were “too premium to gift anybody.”

AITA FOR KICKING MY FRIEND OUT AFTER GOING TO A CONCERT WITHOUT ME?
I [23F] live alone in a house my grandma left me. It’s a big house, so big bills, plus it gets lonely, so I asked my friend [F24] to come live with me, which seemed like a good idea at the time.
She always thought she had set solid boundaries with her friend.
When she moved in, I made it clear that this was a 50-50 agreement where we both split every bill, from groceries to the WiFi bill, and she agreed.
But before long, it’s clear her friend has no interest in contributing.
But it’s been 4 months since she moved in, and she has not paid one bill in this house.
Aside from getting us takeout, which she does once in a while, I always do the cooking.
This friend appears to have no remorse for totally dropping the ball.
I’ve tried to reason with her time and time again, but she ends up saying “you invited me here,” making me feel guilty, like me offering a rent free space was a bad idea.
Even when I suggested we cut down expenses by doing some things ourselves (like gardening), she would get very angry and say “she’s not used to that life.”
She starts to call her friend out on her irresponsible handling of her finances.
Earlier this month, I told her that if she was going to spend all her money on shopping and concerts rather than helping out, then I’d like her to get tickets or clothes for me too. She ignored it.
So when she asked her friend for a favor in return, it was flatly rejected.
Last night there was a concert I genuinely wanted to go to, but I didn’t have the whole amount for the tickets. It was an artist we both love, and I begged her to get me a ticket, and she said she couldn’t, “they are too premium to gift anybody.”
I was hurt because it was the first time I wanted something from her, and I really couldn’t afford it.
So she issues an ultimatum.
I told her it was fine, but if she went to the concert without me, she would have to move out. She did, and I asked her to leave.
AITA for going with this decision?
This friendship sounds dysfunctional with a capital D.
What did Reddit have to say?
Maybe it’s time to call it quits on this friendship.

It’s time to have the hard conversation.

Four months of covering every single bill while your “roommate” pays for concerts and shopping trips? Yeah, that’s not really a fair agreement at all.
The “you invited me here” line is such a cop-out. Being invited somewhere doesn’t mean you get a free pass on literally everything you agreed to when you moved in.
But it was when this woman finally asked for something in return that her friend’s true colors were revealed. One would think that after everything she’s been handed for free, this roomie would be a little more generous.
Some people are just too selfish to be reasoned with.
