Not every conflict comes from malice — sometimes it’s just bad timing.

One woman ran headfirst into a dramatic scheduling conflict when her friend’s delayed wedding reception happened to fall on the same day as her son’s senior homecoming dance.

The reception sat two hours away, while pictures for homecoming were scheduled for that same evening, leaving her with an impossible timeline to make both work.

She chose to stay home, spending nearly five hours doing hair, makeup, and nails for her son’s girlfriend and her friend.

So when she didn’t show, her friend confronted her for hurting her feelings, even though she’d allegedly known about the scheduling overlap from the start.

Keep reading to hear Reddit chime in on the issue.

AITA for choosing my sons homecoming over my friends reception

My friend got married over a month ago but chose to have her reception at a later date.

But a scheduling conflict soon created some turmoil.

The date she chose just happened to be the same day as my son’s homecoming dance. He’s a senior in high school, so it’s his last. Her venue was 2 hours away.

She decided to prioritize family — and her friend wasn’t too happy.

My son’s girlfriend and her friend were also at our house, so I decided to stay home and help the 3 of them get ready. It took almost 5 hours, but all 3 got out the door on time looking spectacular!

My friend said I hurt her feelings because I didn’t at least try to come to her reception.

But the woman explains this would have been virtually impossible.

The reception was from 2-5pm. Homecoming was at 7, but meeting at 6 for pictures. There is no way I could have driven the 2 hours there and 2 hours home and had any time for anyone else.

She thinks it wasn’t really that big of a deal.

It wasn’t a fancy “pay per plate” type of reception. She didn’t even have food. She had cookies and other snack-type foods. She knew his homecoming was on the date she was choosing, and I told her from day one that I’d be there if I could, but there was no guarantee.

I did not RSVP that I was 100% going.

But now she wonders if she did wrong by her friend.

AITA for choosing to be with my son and help him get ready for his last homecoming dance?

This is a tough one.

What did Reddit have to say?

This commenter seems to think this woman could have made more of an effort.

Maybe she could have been more direct with her friend from the start.

This redditor devolves into a “kids these days” argument.

Knowing about a scheduling conflict from the start and still expecting a round trip both ways is asking a lot from one afternoon.

Reddit didn’t land on one clean answer here, though. Plenty of commenters pointed out that she never actually promised a hard yes, and that a friend who books a reception knowing about a conflict shouldn’t be shocked when the conflict wins.

Others thought a phone call or a quick stop by the reception, even for twenty minutes, would’ve gone a long way toward showing effort instead of a flat no-show. A few even sided with the friend, arguing that milestones matter on both ends and a little advance planning could’ve made both events work.

Ultimately, there are only so many hours in the day, and sometimes hurt feelings are inevitable.
