Man Descends 1200 ft Into Active Volcano to Experience Lava Lake Up Close

by twistedsifter

Sam Cossman and George Kourounis guided by volcanic pioneers Geoff Mackely and Brad Ambrose become among the first explorers to step foot inside one of the worlds most dangerous and inaccessible volcanoes, Marum Crater. More people have visited the moon than the fiery bottom of this spectacular and deadly place.

Ambrym is a volcanic island in Malampa Province in the archipelago of Vanuatu. It is a large basaltic volcano with a 12-km-wide caldera, and one of the most active volcanoes of the New Hebrides volcanic arc. The 1900-year-old caldera is the site of two active volcanic cones, Benbow and Marum (which is seen in the above video). [source]
