Sometimes, the real issue in shared living isn’t the rent or the chores, it’s the people who are brought into the space.

So, what would you do if your roommates wanted to hire a stranger to live in your home for a week just to care for their dogs? Would you quietly deal with it? Or would you push back and insist that your home should stay comfortable for you, too?

In the following story, one roommate finds himself dealing with this very scenario. Here’s the full scoop.

WIBTA if I don’t let my roommates hire a live-in dogsitter while they’re out of town for the week?

My roommates (a couple) are going out of town for the week. They have two dogs, and they want to hire someone to take care of them for the week. The problem is that they want that person to sleep here and take care of them so that the dogs’ routines aren’t disrupted.

I offered to take care of them for the week, but they seem pretty reluctant to take me up on the offer.

I’m a pretty shy and introverted person, so the thought of someone I don’t know living here for the week while I’m working from home doesn’t sound so fun.

I’ve offered twice, and even though they claim they don’t want me to feel uncomfortable in my own home, they still seem to want to hire someone.

There’s a good reason he doesn’t spend much time at home.

They’re pretty neurotic about their dogs, and while I’m fully confident in my ability to take care of two dogs (I grew up with them, and I’ve dog-sat theirs during the day many times), I don’t love the feeling of having to audition to do them a favor.

To play devil’s advocate against myself a little, I can see why they’re reluctant. I’ve grown pretty tired of living with a couple, so I don’t spend much time at home or in common areas anymore (I’m moving in October).

From their perspective, I’m busy and don’t interact with the dogs much, but generally, I’m just trying to avoid the third wheel dynamic.

I’m not really interested in continuing to audition for this job, which I’m willing to do, but not particularly interested in.

AITA?

Wow! They sound pretty inconsiderate for this one.

Let’s see what advice the fine folks over at Reddit can offer.

Surely, they’ll let him watch the dogs after he explains his feelings and reasoning behind staying away.
