Checking in on a friend can go a few different ways. Your friend can appreciate your concern; they can be indifferent about it…or they could take it as an affront to their privacy and get all ticked off at you.

You just never know!

The guy who wrote this story found out in a hurry that his best friend wasn’t too happy after he checked in on him because he was worried about his well-being.

Get all the details below, and see if you think he might’ve taken things too far.

AITA for checking up on my best friend?

“I (30M) and my best friend Darren (29M) sometimes we play video games together since I’ve met him.

He is my ex boyfriend and I know there’s always that thing of “don’t stay friends with your ex” but it’s been over 3 years since he broke up with me and usually we’re petty civil and jokey about most things when we hang out or play video games which has mainly been Fortnite since Day 1.

We started dating back in June 2022 then when he broke up with me in May 2023 it was with respect and agreed to stay friends.

There’s always some kind of problem, right…?

So the point of this post is to see if I was in the wrong to the following: Last night we were ready to make a PlayStation party because I asked him around 10 pm if he was ready and he said yes. So I did and then I got on Fortnite.

I noticed he was on too so I waited and scrolling through reels on Instagram because I’m not gonna rush him because maybe he’s using the restroom or whatever.

Then 20 minutes later I saw he went offline. I’m not sure why but it was odd since we just agreed to play the game.

Usually he tells me if he’s going to sleep instead of wanting to game which whatever I understand. His job is physically and mentally demanding I’d imagine so much respect for that.

He was a bit freaked out about this.

I texted him asking him is “everything okay?” And then about 15-20 minutes later I sent another one like “Darren?”

I, being a good friend, started changing into different clothes quickly because I became nervous.

I tried calling him 2 times and no answer.

I did ask our mutual friend Justine (21F) if she was awake and up to see what she’d think because I wanted another opinion even though it’s like 11:30 pm by this point.

He was really worried.

She asked what happened and then I told her but then she didn’t respond anymore so I assumed she went to sleep/passed out.

So I drove to his house (20 minutes roughly from me) and tried calling him 2 more times but again nothing so my anxiety is high but in the back of my head part of me knows he probably just got tired out of nowhere and went to bed.

So after like 15 minutes in my car I texted him again saying things along the lines of “I was at your house just to check up on you because you abruptly went offline without explanation which turned into me worrying about you. I hope you just went to bed so I’m gonna go back home now. Have a good night”.

Then I went home and went to bed and woke up around 5 am randomly and saw he responded.

Uh oh…

First he said it was “freakin weird” of me to stop by his house unannounced but also that he didn’t hear any of the calls or texts because he has his phone on silent mode when he goes to sleep because I apparently “blow up his phone.”

Mainly when I send reels and such (which that’s true sometimes I get bored on a day off and send a lot of reels) and to that first part I agree because at night especially you don’t know who it could be and that’s scary I’m sure, but on the other hand we’re still pretty good friends and I thought I was doing the right thing.

I responded to his text about apologizing for going over unannounced but also said that I’m also sorry I care about him enough to check up on him if something didn’t feel right ti me at first.

Turns out he did just get tired and went to sleep he said.

Well, it seems like readers have mixed feelings about this story. But I personally think this guy should probably back off a little bit.

Maybe he was being a bit too intrusive…

This guy might want to slow his roll and let his friend do his own thing…
