Customer Dangles Money Out of My Reach as a Joke

I try to ignore all the rude, inconsiderate things customers do for the sake of my own sanity, but this really had me fuming.

I had just finished ringing up items for a middle-aged man and woman (I’m assuming they were a couple). I told them the total, and the man took a bill out of his wallet and held it in the air in front of me.

Customers always seem to want to give me money every way, EXCEPT placing it in my hand, so I thought nothing of it and went to grab the bill.

This jerk yanked it up higher in the air, wiggled it, and said, “You almost had it.” He and the woman with him both giggled.

This woman thought what the customer did was humiliating.

It dawned on me that he was trying to do that “you gotta be quicker than that” meme from the insurance commercial, so I put my hand out and stared at him, stone-faced.

He said, “Not much in a joking mood today, are we? Sorry, just trying to be funny,” and put the money in my hand.

I realize that he wasn’t being malicious, and likely didn’t realize how it came across, but it was seriously humiliating and enraging to be treated like a dancing monkey for some jerk’s enjoyment.

I wish I had thought of some clever comeback or something, but I’ve just been stewing about it ever since.

I get trying to be funny, but this is just stupid.
