What’s a normal number of pets for someone to have if they live in apartment? One, maybe two?

What would you do if you visited a friend who lived in a small apartment, and she had a lot of pets in her apartment? We’re talking multiple dogs and cats. Would you mind your own business, think her pet filled apartment is fun, or worry about the pets?

In this story, one woman is in this situation, and she’s worried about the pets. She decides to tell the landlord, which could have serious consequences for her friend. Now, she’s wondering if that was the wrong thing to do.

AITA For reporting my friend to her landlord

I’ve (20F) know my friend C(18F) for almost our entire lives, are mothers are friends.

I don’t talk her very often since her and I have clashing personalities. Shes just very bossy and tries to tell me what to do whenever I see her.

Recently she purchased a ferret and I just wanted to go meet him.

Visiting her friend started out okay.

She moved out last April from her parents house when she turned 18. Moved into a SMALL one bed and one bathroom apartment with her boyfriend.

This was the first time I went to her new place.

At first everything seemed fine, other than the bad smell of dog waste.

I overlooked it, she said her new puppy just had an accident, nbd.

She has a lot of pets.

I noticed that there were a few dogs barking in the bedroom and some were kenneled in the main area, so I asked her how many animals she owned.

She then told me that she had 7 dogs and 3 cats in her apartment. There were two dogs in one kennel and 5 other kennels with blankets covering them.

I looked into on of the kennels and she said “there is most likely dog waste in the kennel, 3 of the dogs aren’t potty trained”.

Sure enough there was, although the dogs were very sweet when I pet them through their cage.

She felt bad for the pets.

I didn’t say anything to her at the time and just left.

It honestly looked like a shelter in there and it was honestly heartbreaking.

Shes never been really nice to animals so that fact she has a whole pack of dogs is ridiculous.

There may be big consequences for her friend.

I decided to write an anonymous email to the management of the apartments and let them know what was going on.

They responded they are going to look into the issue.

The reason that I think I could be TA is because some have mentioned to me that it was none of my business.

Also there is a huge possibility that not only will the dogs be taken, she will probably be evicted and fined.

Her friend really is breaking the rules.

I am in the United States, my county rules are that you cant have more than 4 dogs and 4 cats on a residential lot. And animal hoarding is a form of abuse.

She mentioned she wanted to get two more ferrets after I left and that was the cherry on top to me reporting her about the amount of animals.

The dogs she has are big dogs, she has two husky’s and the others are labs and pit bulls, and retrievers.

She feels guilty.

I thought it was the right thing to do.

I know animal hoarding is an indication of mental illness, but I had to do something for the animals, they probably are in cages a lot of the time.

Its been guilting me lately and I wanted some other feedback.

Her friend has way too many pets. I can’t imagine having multiple big dogs in one small apartment! Yikes! It sounds like insanity. How is her friend’s boyfriend okay with all these animals? Or is the boyfriend the one who is collecting the pets?

Either way, she did the right thing, but if her friend figures out who ratted her out, the friendship might be over.

The pets are more important than the friendship.
