Man Kept Getting His Raise Delayed By Management, So He Took A Better-Paying Job When The Opportunity Came

You can only get jerked around for so long by a boss about getting a raise before it’s time to set out for greener pastures.
The guy who wrote this story obviously put in the time and effort over the course of a few years, but when he found out that he wasn’t getting paid what he was worth, he was ready to bolt!

I quit after finding out my direct report was making more than me.
“I worked on a very lean team for over 3 years.
I never complained, happily took on new responsibilities, and my work was very clean. I was open to feedback and even worked on approved PTO days when needed.
The company is known to underpay and overwork their employees, but the tradeoff is you are fully remote. Which was fine as I saved money and time working from home.
What was this all about…?
I was content until my company posted a job opening for a position under mine and the salary range was higher than what I was making.
I brought it up to management a few times and I was basically brushed off with “we’ll revisit”, “we don’t do raises mid-year”, all answers without change or hope.
Of course, after the new hire joined, I am fully responsible for training him.
He wasn’t too thrilled about this.
The entire time I was filled with anger and resentment knowing I am training someone for a position beneath mine, while knowing their salary is higher than my actual salary.
Mind you, I worked at this company longer than his entire professional work experience.
Losing patience, I brought it up to management again.
This time, they told me was my “salary would be revisited at year end.” … with year end being four months away still.
At this point, I wasn’t upset about the money. It felt like a slap in the face the way they were dangling a carrot in front of my face and pulling it further away. Meanwhile, the new hire gets a golden carrot in comparison.

Funny how timing can work, because another company reached out to me to apply for an opening shortly before the new hire onboarded. Luckily, I excelled in all the interviews, and I graciously accepted their offer. The new job provided me a higher salary, bonus, and even equity.
He tried to tell them!
Of course, when I gave my two week notice, my company acted shocked. As if I wasn’t voicing my concern for months on end. They couldn’t wrap their heads around why I wanted to leave so suddenly.
Some time has passed, and my old company has reached out to me gauging my interest to return. I informed them of my current salary, and they said they couldn’t match it, but would be happy to bring me on again.
To corporate America – if you don’t want to lose your employees, pay them their worth and show them respect! It’s utterly ridiculous what they think they can get away with. Just know their game is NOT to be played, and to take a chance on yourself if you’re in a similar position.”
