“You Have the Money!”: Student Outraged After Entitled Friend Demands She Fund Her Festival Trip

Magnific

Mixing friends and money is usually not a good idea. Lending money, even if it seems harmless, can become a problem and put the friendship at risk. Still, some people think it’s no big deal if you can afford it.

In this case, a 19-year-old student with a job works very hard to afford things and learned the hard way not to lend money.

So in this situation, she was excited to support her friend’s band at a music festival, even though the ticket was expensive. She worked extra shifts to afford her own ticket, some merch, drinks, and even a little treat for the friend performing.

Then another friend started hinting that she might need help buying her ticket.

AITA for not offering to buy my friends ticket to a festival.

So my (19F) friends (Hailey 20F, Jax 19M, Kyle 18M and Axel 18M) love live music and indie gigs.

They don’t happen all that often where we live.

I’m not much of a fan of them but Axel recently started a band and I wanted to be a supportive friend.

There was a big enough festival in a nearby town that Axel’s band got invited to play at.

Now the tickets were sorta expensive, considering I am freshly out of my final exams (which I left my job so I could spend the most time studying since I have high prospects for college).

It’s a common situation for a student.

None of my other friends have much cash either.

So as soon as my exams were over, I went back to my job and worked loads of shifts so I could buy the ticket, merch and have enough to buy drinks and treat Axel to one too.

Fast forward to the week of the festival, I was on call with my friends while buying my ticket and Hailey started dropping hints that she also needed to buy a ticket and she only had cash, so maybe I should buy for both of us now and she would pay me when we got there.

She got the hints and knew what was going on.

I don’t do that because of some ex-friends who took advantage of the fact I worked and they didn’t.

So I told her I was already at the confrontation page even though I wasn’t.

She seemed slightly put off by that but I didn’t see an issue. The festival was letting you buy a ticket on site if you only had cash.

Day of the festival comes and all my friends are there except Hailey. Jax and Kyle were just as confused as me.

Jax sends a message to Hailey and she left him on read. It wasn’t until after Axel’s set, when we stopped by the bar.

Things got kind of ugly.

Kyle went to take a picture of our drinks to post on his story when he noticed Hailey had a private story up.

Turns out she was bashing me for not buying her a ticket because she didn’t have enough money and I had plenty.

I don’t have excesses of money, I’ve only been back at work a month or 2 and I’ve done so many cover shifts and overtime shifts to be able to afford this very deserved day out.

I get that she might not have had money either, but Jax and Kyle also didn’t and they both got jobs.

I just want to know if I’m in the wrong, feel free to knock me down a peg if I am, but I truly don’t think I was.

AITA?

Hailey needs to be more direct if she wants something and then be okay when the answer is no. What did Reddit think?

“Immature” is the word.

It’s complicated because they’re friends, so people feel hurt more easily. But the truth is, you shouldn’t feel entitled to someone’s money like this, even if they’re your best friend. It’s impolite and immature.

She worked extra shifts to afford her own day out and went out of her way to support her friend’s band. It’s not like she has a bunch of money lying around. But even if she did.

Her friend was indirect instead of simply asking for a loan and accepting the answer. Then she posted about her in her Stories.

Yikes. This could break up the group for no good reason.
