Some parents really don’t understand how to raise their kids and it shows!

This teenager shares how his dad wanted to show up at his graduation after being absent for nearly a decade.

Check out how things escalated between them.

AITAH for refusing to let my dad and his wife come to my high school graduation?

I’m (18M) graduating high school in a little over a month and I refused to let my dad come to the ceremony.

I’ll give a short background and a longer background to explain but before that I just wanted to say that I’m being pressured by two of my dad’s siblings to give in and invite him but they’ll also say them too so I’m assuming they believe his wife should be there too.

This is where it gets weird…

They have told me several times already that as my dad he should be there and I should use this as a chance to reconcile and get over past issues we have.

Short background: My dad sent me to live with my grandparents/his parents when I was 9 because I threatened his wife for saying she was my mom now.

I wouldn’t let him convince me that she was my new mom and I was very angry and yelled a lot which made him send me away because he didn’t want me to destroy his marriage.

I saw him once a month or less after that. Most of our conversations have been about his wife and the reason I was sent to my grandparents.

Their relationship has always been distant…

Longer background: I lost my mom when I was 6 and my dad started dating his wife when I was 8. They got married after a few months of dating and once they were married they started referring to her as my mom.

Dad would say go ask your mom or your mom wants to talk to you. His wife would tell me she was there to be my mom now and I didn’t need to keep saying she wasn’t.

She’d try to be nicer about it but she started to get firm when I started to interrupt her and dad every time they’d say it and I got angrier as I corrected them more.

It was maybe 4 months after they got married that she got really annoyed with me rejecting her and we argued and I told her she was never going to be my mom and I told her I’d hurt her if she kept saying she was.

He was trying to make things work…

I told her I didn’t want her and I didn’t love and I was never going to let her be my mom and I’d rather she was dead. She told me to apologize and I refused and I told her to go die.

She told my dad when he got home and he tried to make me apologize but I refused and I told him I meant it. I told him I hated him too and I wasn’t going to replace mom like he did.

He tried to talk me down and get me to give into his wife being my mom now but when I was still yelling and angry after a couple of hours he called my grandparents to come and get me and he told them I would need to live there because I was going to ruin his marriage.

He visited once a month or less. He’d bring up his wife and the reasons for sending me away. He’d try to call her my mom still and I’d correct and interrupt him still. It would always sorta repeat.

UH OH…

His visits reduced significantly when I turned 15 because I told him he was wasting his time trying to talk me around because his wife still isn’t my mom and I still refuse to replace mom like he did.

He asked me if I really saw him getting married again as replacing mom and I said no it was trying to make his wife my new mom as if it worked just like that.

He kinda lost his temper and he told me that I just refused to move on and loads of kids would love to have a woman loving enough to step up and be an additional mom.

But still whenever I saw him the topic would stay the same and I just engaged less.

They have been apart for far too long!

And now it’s been 6 months since I spoke to him last or saw him. But he texted about my graduation and has been calling around and asking about it and I gave my answer via text and to any family who asked.

My grandparents are on my side and they told him it was shameful that he was trying to force his way into such a big milestone when our relationship has been destroyed in the last 10 years.

But he’s saying that he never let me go and has tried to maintain a relationship and therefore they should be there as my parents.

And when I heard him say they were my parents I wanted to scream because he might be biologically my parent but he hasn’t raised me in a decade and his wife will never be my parent and claiming she is just shows how little has changed.

AITAH?

WHAT? That sounds horrible!

How can his parents claim something like that?
