Blending a family often means rethinking traditions that used to feel simple, birthdays included.

One father, raising two shared sons and treating his girlfriend’s daughter as his own, decided to celebrate his birthday a day late so all three kids could be there together. His stepdaughter has struggled with feeling like the odd one out in a split custody situation, and he didn’t want his birthday to reinforce that.

He asked his parents to keep the exact date quiet while the younger boys stayed with them for the week, hoping to avoid confusion. That’s when his mom decided the whole plan amounted to blatant dishonesty.

Now he’s wondering if he was in the wrong for just trying to do the right thing.

AITA for not telling my kids its my birthday to celebrate at a later date

I live with my GF, our two shared boys (4 and 6), and her daughter (9).

I consider her my kid just as much as the boys, and I would like to celebrate my birthday a day later when she is home.

Lately things have been a bit tough around the household.

Our daughter is having a tough time being a shared kid and feels like she is missing out on a lot of stuff.

The 2 youngest kids are spending some time with my parents this week.

This father likes to keep things simple for this family.

The kids don’t know the exact date of my birthday, and to avoid confusing them, I asked my parents to not tell them the specific date or talk about the birthday in general.

Not everyone agrees with his tactics.

My mom thinks by not telling them and not celebrating on the “correct” date, I am lying and setting a bad example, and I am keeping her from being able to celebrate me.

I believe I am saving my boys from some unnecessary confusion and letting my daughter feel included.

AITA?

His mother needs to just stay out of it and let him do his thing.

What did Reddit have to say?

Maybe part of being a good parent is knowing your child enough to know the types of information they’re ready for.

Why does his mother care so much about this anyway?

Delaying a birthday celebration by one day so a child who already feels left out can be part of it isn’t setting a bad example, it’s modeling exactly the kind of consideration you’d want a parent to show.

His mom appears to be taking the definition of “lying” quite literally here. Sometimes there are good reasons for not telling the complete truth. And at the end of the day, is it really hurting anyone?

What this situation really comes down to is whose comfort gets prioritized, and this dad made the right call by choosing his kids.
