Her Neighbor Just Smiled as Her Dog Trespassed and Destroyed Their Garden

Open yards between neighbors work fine when everyone respects the space. This story shows what happens when common courtesy goes out the window.
One new homeowner quickly got an odd introduction to her new neighbor when she walked up casually asking upfront if a loose dog would be a problem, claiming the previous owners never minded.
Suspicious timing aside, a mysterious pile of ash also happened to be sitting right at the edge of the shared property line.
For a while, the dog stayed leashed and contained, but it wasn’t long before the neighbor was letting her dog roam wherever he pleased.

Caught my backyard neighbor letting her dog into our yard
Backyard neighbor has a friendly dog.
Our yards are open to each other, and we plan on getting a fence (planned to do this before we met her, but it’s been pushed up the list now).
From the start, these neighbors had a questionable understanding of boundaries.
When we first met, one of the very first things she said to us was “oh, I have a dog, do you care? The previous owners didn’t care if he ran around.”
Which we suspect was not true, more like they were infirm older women who could not object.
It became clear this neighbor was just used to doing whatever she wanted.
There is also a spot in our yard where a lot of ash has been dumped, and this neighbor regularly has her campfire set up right on the edge of our properties.
We suspect she was dumping it in our yard before we moved in, while the house was vacant.
Anyway, for a while she was keeping the dog on a lead to keep him in her yard.
Then, all courtesy went by the wayside.
This morning I was looking out into the backyard and watched as she let her dog out and stood on her back deck, hands on hips and smile on her face, as she just watched her dog walk up into our yard and pee on our plants.
This homeowner knows what she has to do, but it doesn’t make it any more pleasant.
I’m so ticked, and I know the thing to do is have a direct conversation, but dang.
We’ve been here 3 months, I feel like she needs to be a better neighbor.
This neighbor needs to get a grip — and fast.
