He Hijacked the Groom’s Wedding Toast to Announce His Kid’s Birthday—All to One-Up His Brother

There’s a big rule when it comes to weddings. You don’t want to upstage the bride, groom, or the wedding itself. This is the big day for the happy couple, and you shouldn’t try to steal the spotlight.
In this story, one man intentionally stole the spotlight to the mortification of his child who begged him not to do it.
Either he really doesn’t know anything about wedding etiquette or he just doesn’t care, but it was definitely a moment that felt out of place at the wedding.
Let’s read all about it.
My dad’s extremely embarrassing announcement at my cousins wedding celebration
A few years ago, my cousin (dads side) and his wife had a dinner for both of their entire extended families to celebrate their elopement from a few weeks earlier.
It was pretty much a delayed wedding reception.
The dinner also happened to be on my birthday.
His dad didn’t want the event to overshadow OP’s birthday.
My dad and his brother (father of the groom) don’t really get along and are in constant competition over everything.
My very mature father apparently just couldn’t stand that the day was about his brothers family.
He told me that he was going to get up and announce it was my birthday as my uncle was giving a speech thanking everyone for coming.
I was immediately horrified and begged him not to.
But his dad did it anyway.
But he completely ignored me and stood up, clinked his glass and proceeded to announce it was my birthday and suggested that everyone wish me a happy birthday.
This was met with a very awkward “happy birthday” and scattered clapping from a few of the guests.
It was even worse because I had never even met anyone from the brides family.
I have never been so mortified in my entire life.
He was so embarrassed.
I ended up pulling my cousin and his wife aside later and apologized.
They both knew how our parents were so, thankfully, laughed it off and understood.
My dad still doesn’t understand “what the big deal is”.
His dad may have been trying to one up his brother, or he may have genuinely thought he was doing a good thing by asking everyone to wish his child a happy birthday. Either way, as long as the bride and groom were able to laugh it off, no harm done.
Let’s see how Reddit responded.
This person offers a suggestion of what to say to the dad.

It’s sad that this is often true.

This is so childish.

Another person thinks the dad sounds like a narcissist.

I’d be a little annoyed if I had to go to my cousin’s wedding on my birthday instead of actually getting to celebrate my birthday, but that doesn’t mean I’d want wedding guests I don’t know wishing me a happy birthday. How awkward! If anyone was going to announce that it was OP’s birthday, it would’ve needed to be the bride or groom, and even then, it should only be if OP was okay with it.
The dad really messed up that day.
