He Prefers Going To The Gym Alone Over Supporting Her — And He’s Made A Friend There She’s Not Sure About

Getting back into an old routine can be surprisingly difficult, especially when you’re already struggling with motivation and anxiety.

For one woman, going back to the gym after nearly two years felt like a bigger hurdle than it might sound, since she also has to deal with a serious mental health issue.

So she asked her boyfriend for a little help.

He agreed… But then he changed his mind. Then he agreed again, only to later say he really just felt guilty.

And that left her wondering whether she was asking for an unreasonable amount of support or expecting too much from him.

See what happened below.

AITA for expecting my boyfriend to help me get back to the gym while I’m struggling with bipolar II?

I was recently diagnosed with bipolar type 2 and was going through a depressive episode.

I was struggling to get back into basic routines, and going back to the gym was giving me anxiety.

That’s why I asked him for help, mainly for support to get started.

He initially told me he would take me, but then he changed his mind and said no, then again said yes, and in the end told me he had only said it out of guilt.

He seems uncomfortable.

That inconsistency confused me and made me feel unstable.

On top of that, he generally doesn’t want to take me to the gym because he says it’s his time to relax. I can understand that to a certain extent.

He also says that he already does a lot for me emotionally by listening to me and being there for me, which I do understand can feel like a lot when someone is going through emotional instability.

But from my perspective, I’m not asking for something constant or overwhelming.

She is not feeling the partnership aspect of the relationship.

I’m asking for help going to the gym just a few days, especially because I haven’t gone in almost two years and it’s hard for me to start again on my own.

There was also another situation that made me uncomfortable: he made a “friend” at the gym.

In the end they weren’t really friends, but it was a strange situation, hard to explain, because they still followed each other on social media even though they were basically strangers from the gym.

She doesn’t feel secure.

That made me feel uncomfortable and added to the distrust.

So all of this together affected me more than it might seem.

It’s not really about the gym itself, but about feeling a lack of consistency, not feeling supported when I needed it, and several things that made me feel like I’m not a priority.

AITA?

He’s halfway out of the relationship already, in my humble opinion. But what did Reddit think?

She might need professional help.

This is good advice, even if hard to hear.

This person also thinks she’s in the wrong.

A reasonable comment.

Wanting more support is perfectly fine and she deserves it. Everyone deserves to feel supported and loved in their relationship.

Wanting your boyfriend to help you get through a difficult period doesn’t seem inherently unreasonable. But he’s also allowed to decide that his gym time is something he wants to keep for himself.

The bigger problem seems to be how the two of them are communicating about it.

His changing answers left her feeling unsupported, while he apparently feels like he’s already doing plenty.

Then there’s the questionable gym friendship adding even more fuel to the fire.

I say call it quits before things get worse.
