Let’s get one thing clear. Nobody owns the public street parking in front of their house.

Now that we’re all in agreement about that, let’s get to the big question. What would you do if your neighbor seemed to think they owned the public street parking in front of their house and got upset if you parked there?

That’s the dilemma the couple in this story is dealing with, and they disagree about what to do. Should they simply park somewhere else or confront the neighbors to clarify the situation?

Let’s read the whole story to decide.

Parking in front of “their” house

This is kind of a mild problem that I don’t want to turn into a major issue and wanted some advice on how to handle.

We own our house and have lived in the neighborhood for almost 20 years and know most people on our street.

There is a rental across the street that just got new tenants.

The neighbors complained about where her husband parked his car.

My husband usually parks in our driveway unless he is home before I am, when he will either park on the street on “our” side or on the opposite side in front of the new neighbor’s house, depending on which direction he comes from. (I use the garage, which I cannot get into if he is in the driveway).

Last night he received a note on his windshield that said, “People live here now, don’t park in front of our house.”

I know that the easy solution is to not park there anymore, but my husband feels (and he is right) that it is a public street and anyone can park wherever they want.

He wants to talk with them and explain this, but I am pretty sure it won’t go over well.

I side with her husband. He should talk to them. They don’t own the street parking in front of their house.

Let’s see if Reddit agrees.

Here’s something to consider.

No, it would not be hard for her husband to park in front of their own house. Does he have to? No. Could he, out of consideration for the neighbors? Yes.

The neighbors are wrong, but it may not be worth it to argue with them.
