In the San Francisco Bay Area, the age-old struggle between the “Haves” and Have-Nots” is playing out on the sea. For years, “Anchor-Outs,” people who anchor their boats just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, have lived rent-free among one of the wealthiest areas in the United States. Recently, their way of life is being threatened by California authorities who are under pressure from local homeowners and conservation groups.
While Anchor-Outs argue that many in their community have jobs but can’t afford the area’s soaring cost of living, residents point out that these floating homes are dangerous and their owners don’t pay taxes. For some, it all comes down to the law and for others, this particular San Francisco battle is about capitalism versus compassion.
