Imagine having a visible disability where you really do need to take advantage of handicap parking spots whenever possible.
If you forgot to bring your handicapped placard with you, would you still park in an open handicap spot?
In today’s story, one person is in this situation and decides to park in an open handicap spot, but now, they’re wondering if that was a bad idea.
Let’s read the whole story.
AITA for parking in a handicap spot even though I forgot my placard
I have a disability and have a handicap placard in my car.
My disability is relatively visible in that once I get out of my car people can see my leg is definitely messed up, I’ve even had people come up to me asking if I’m in pain.
Today my SIL and brother had an emergency with her mom and asked if I could take their oldest to preschool and babysit till they got back.
I get to their house and SIL insisted I use her car because the car seats are already in there.
They forgot something important.
We head off to my niece’s preschool and I realize I forgot my handicap placard in my car.
Alright no big deal until I circled the area and realized the parking situation.
Her preschool is really small so they have a small lot with 2 handicap spots right by the doors otherwise you have to park across the street in a big lot and walk.
There was one car in the handicap spot but the other one was open so I said forget it and decided to park there.
I also didn’t bring my cane so the walk across the street with my niece’s would’ve been difficult.
Someone else wanted to park there.
As I was getting the girls out a parent pulls up behind me and asked if I have a handicap placard.
I just told her I forgot it.
She then pulls hers out and tells me she needs the spot.
I tell her to just look at my leg & I made an honest mistake of forgetting it so I’m not going to move.
Now, she is wondering if they messed up.
She goes to park across the street but I could definitely feel the judgy eyes from her while we were waiting inside the building.
I told my SIL and brother about this and SIL thinks the lady should’ve minded her business.
My brother was ticked because I technically put them at risk of getting a ticket but if that was the case we could contest and prove I was using the car and I just forgot my placard.
He also mentioned that they get monthly newsletters from the preschool reminding parents not to park in the handicap spots because I guess they have a problem with that so he doesn’t think this lady was wrong for asking. So AITA?
It sounds like this person really does need to use handicapped parking spots, but was it okay to park there without a handicapped placard?
Reddit users were spit on their verdict.
This person doesn’t think anyone was in the wrong here.

Here’s a similar comment.

A person with a disability thinks OP shouldn’t have parked there.

Another person points out that OP broke the law.

The law was not on this person’s side.
