I purchased 2 tickets for me and my significant other.

They cost $2,000 for economy, which isn’t too bad for direct flights from the US to London.

I did not choose seats and pay those fees, as they cost $700 to $950 additional.

My significant other asks me to add the seats on for $700 more.

If sitting together matters that much to OP’s partner, asking her to cover the upgrade herself seems reasonable.

But they probably should have discussed the budget beforehand to have avoided such an argument.
