Her Hotel Room Wasn’t Cleaned All Week — She Accepted The Answer, But Her Dad Wants The Policy Changed

Imagine staying at a hotel for a week. Would you expect to have your room cleaned every day? What would you do if you had been staying in the same room for more than a week and a housekeeper had never even set foot in your room?
In this story, which happens to take place during covid, one woman finds herself in that situation. She seemed to understand the front desk worker’s explanation, but her dad tried to get the hotel to change their rules.

Guest’s dad has a hissy fit. I shut him down.
So because of Covid, we are not cleaning any stay over rooms to prevent the risk of spread incase on the off chance that one of our housekeepers catch it (none have so far, thank god.)
So I come in for my shift and dismiss the last girl.
Before I can even start anything else for my shift, one lady that’s been here for about a week. She was nice, looks to be in her 50s
Lady: Excuse me. I’ve been staying here for a week and my room hasn’t been cleaned. I’ve had to wash my own sheets and towels.
The lady seemed understanding.
Me: oh, yeah, because of covid we aren’t cleaning rooms to prevent the risk of spreading the disease. I can trade out your dirty laundry for clean ones if you like.
Lady: oh, no. It’s okay. Can I possibly borrow a vaccum?
Me: of course, let me grab that for you. You can leave it by the employee door when you’re done.
Lady: thank you.
Me: have a nice night.
But it wasn’t over.
And then, about five minutes later, her father calls.
Pops: I’m paying for my daughter to stay in room X and you people haven’t cleaned her room at all!
Me: as I explained to her just a few minutes ago, becouse of covid we aren’t cleaning stay over rooms to stop the risk of spreading the disease.
Pops: I am paying for by day so you will be cleaning daily!
OP refused.
Me: no sir.
Pops: excuse me?!
Me: I said no sir. While there is a daily rate, we charge you by week. Not by day. You have paid a whole week. Not a day.
Pops: well, you are going to clean her room, and give her full service.
Enough is enough!
Me: hangs up because he’s clearly not listening to me
Two minutes later, he calls back.
Pops: you hung up on me!
Me: yes I did, sir.
He had another unreasonable suggestion.
Pops: you will give her full service!
Me: no, sir. We are not risking the health of our staff and guests.
Pops: then you will move her to a new room every day!
Me: no, sir. We don’t do that.
OP was not going to give in.
Pops: listen here-
Me, being 100% done: sir, I do not tell you how to do your job, you will not tell me how to do mine. Have a nice day hangs up

He hasn’t called back and I have told my manager about the whole conversations with Pops and Lady. My manager is very sick of people like Pops calling and he was not thrilled with Pops trying to tell me what to do.
Also, Pops was exteremly agressive in both calls. Needless to say I have had my fill of nonsense for the week.
I can see both sides of this situation. I think it’s really about expectations. If guests are used to having their room cleaned every day, it needs to be made clear when they make the reservation and when they check in that daily housecleaning isn’t happening.
Let’s see how Reddit responded to this story.
Maybe she didn’t ask her dad to call. We’ll never know.

Another person thinks people like the dad are rude.

Here’s a suggestion of what OP could’ve said to the dad.

I guess a lot of people don’t read signs.

The real problem is unmet expectations. Even if there are signs, not everyone knows to look for the signs. People can be quite oblivious. I think this whole problem could’ve been avoided if the front desk staff made a point of pointing out the new housekeeping policy during check in, not just hoping the guests see the signs but actually telling the guests the new policy.
A quick explanation can set expectations straight.
