She Tried to Hide Her Beer From Her Former School Counselor — A Classmate Loudly Joked About It Instead

A joke stops being funny pretty quickly when someone has already told you why it matters.
One recent graduate was shopping with friends when she spotted her former school counselor in the same store.
Because her strict family couldn’t know she drank, she tried to keep the beer hidden while the counselor was nearby.
At checkout, though, a former classmate working the register figured out what she was doing and decided to tease her about it.
He loudly called attention to the beer, and the counselor looked right over.

WIBTA if I report a cashier over a joke
A couple of my friends and I were grabbing beer and chips from a supermarket before we hit the cinema.
While wandering around the aisles, I saw our school counselor. All of us are freshly graduated, so she knew us. We even chatted a little bit.
My family is a very strict Muslim one, so they or anyone who knows my parents can’t know about my occasional drinking habit. That’s why, when we grabbed our beers, we covered my arm with some jacket so the counselor wouldn’t see my beer-stuffed arms.
When they got to the cashier, he started asking questions.
We went to the cashier and uncovered the beers quickly.
Much to our surprise, the cashier was one of our classmates that we aren’t really close to. He asked, “Why are you covering those? You’re over eighteen.”
To which I said, “Because the counselor is here. I don’t want her to know.”
Then, he did something that really upset her.
Then he chuckled and started checking what we bought. When we were about to pay, he yelled, “There’s your BEER, ma’am. It’s FIVE bucks AHAHA.”
Not exactly like this, but in the same loud, cocky way.
Well, he was doing this to apparently “annoy me in a playful way” because when I turned back, I saw the counselor looking at us. She didn’t say anything, didn’t even look for more than a second, but I really panicked and stuffed everything in my bag, which made everything more awkward.
Later, he called to apologize, but she’s not sure how to feel.
He later called me and apologized, but I was so scared and angry I told him to **** off. That he could’ve ruined my life if it was someone else who knows my family. Then I told him what he did was very unprofessional and I could report him if I wanted to.
At this point, he was angry too. He said he was sorry, and if I decided to do that, I should bring it on. Then he hung up.
At first, I was bluffing, but I am seriously considering reporting him over this. My friends are telling me I’m overreacting and I should leave him alone since he apologized. I’m like, maybe they’re right. But none of them, including the cashier, has a religious family that would mind something like this. They don’t know all that stress.
WIBTA?
Yikes! That was a pretty low-down thing for the cashier to do.
Let’s check out what the folks over at Reddit think about this whole thing.
This person explains that two wrongs don’t make a right.

While this sounds harsh, it is very true.

Yet another reader who thinks she needs to let it go.

It’s probably best to let this one go.
Sure, the cashier made a stupid joke and crossed a line, but he also apologized once he realized how serious it was.
At the same time, hiding something like this from your family can create a lot of stress when there’s always a chance they could find out.
So, if drinking could cause that much trouble at home, she may need to think about whether keeping it secret is worth the risk.
