His Landlords Are A Sweet Older Couple — But Their Grandson Is Turning Into A Serious Problem

Having roommates can be difficult, but it can be even more complicated when you rent a room in another family’s house. In that case, the homeowners are your landlords, but they are also your housemates, and anyone else who lives in the house is also your housemate.

In this story, the situation is especially unsettling because a young man is renting a room from an elderly couple whose daughter and grandson also live in the house. The grandson is the real problem.

To be clear, we’re not talking about a little kid. This guy is all grown up, but his behavior is pretty creepy.

Keep reading to see how you’d handle this situation.

First time so far away from home. Landlord´s grandson is being vey anoying.

I´m a 25-year-old male.

I recently moved out of my parents’ house for a job in the city. And I am renting a place that belongs to an elderly couple.

My brother used to rent this place. And he recommended this place to me due to the good price, and good location; A 20-minute bus trip from the house to my workplace, on a car is even less, more like 10 min. I can even ride a bike to work, but that takes like 25 minutes( The bike will become a problem later)

The landlord isn’t the problem.

I have been renting this place for like 2 months now. And the Landlord and his wife have been extremely good with me, giving me free food sometimes and giving me a ride to some places that I needed to go to, since I don’t have a car.

Their grandson, on the other hand, a 17-year-old who lives on the second floor of the building, has been very intrusive.

He has touched my face, my hair, and hug me on multiple occasions, and I find that very weird, because we are not friends.

I was, you could say, friendly to him, like I would be with anyone else ( I even gave him an apple once), but I never tried to hug him or to be physically close to him. Nothing more than a handshake.

But the grandson doesn’t take him seriously.

Every time he has done that, I pushed him away and told him: What the heck, man?! What are you doing? Don´t do that.

But he just laughed off every time, and then tried to do it again. And I pushed him away again every time.

This got old pretty fast, so, since he was not taking me seriously, I spoke with his grandfather and asked him to tell him not to try to touch me again. That I found it weird.

The grandfather apologized to me and scolded him for doing that. That was in the first month.

I wonder how old this kid is.

But after that the problems continued.

We were once going to the super market, they were giving me a ride the so that I could do my shoping as well, and we were all in the car ( The grandparents in the front and me and the grandson on the back)

While on the back, this weird kid started grabing my leg!

I immediately smacked his hand away and shouted at him: Let go of my leg!

At least the grandparents agree that the grandson’s behavior isn’t acceptable.

And right there and then, he got scolded for that too, his grandparents were very angry at him, but he didn´t seem to take them seriously this time either.

He did let go of my leg, but he was also smiling while getting scolded. So…there is that.

A few days after that, he got into my room. I had returned late from work, his grandparents were sleeping already, and I was cleaning my room. When he got down from the second floor and went inside my room, while I was in the bathroom. He said he wanted to ¨chat¨ with me.

To which I replied: ¨No, I´m tired, I wanna sleep, get out.¨

So, the grandson isn’t a kid, or even little. He’s actually all grown up and quite big.

But he did not want to leave the room. Despite my telling him to do so.

To be clear, at that point, I felt annoyed and also anxious because I´m rather short and skinny. I stand at 5´8ft/ 172cm tall and weigh only around 136lb./62kg.

And he is much larger than me. He is around 6´0ft/183cm, and much heavier built than me. He probably is about 30lbs heavier than me, if not more.

So, if he really does not want to get out, it’s gonna be pretty difficult for me to force him to get out of my room.

This is getting creepy.

Instead of getting out of the room, he started mocking me for my underwear( To be clear, I was fully dressed; he was referring to the underwear that was on my bed because I was folding laundry) He mockingly said that if I was ashamed that someone was looking at my underwear, that I should not be, because he has seen it many times while I am hanging it out in the back yard.

That was extremely creepy to me.

I got angry and said: Get out now, or I´m calling your grandfather.

He got out. I locked the door, and shortly after, he tried to get back in by turning the doorknob. And when he could not, he mockingly said: ¨Oww, did I make you angry?¨

Now, about that bicycle.

I answered nothing. And the next morning I spoke with his grandfather about it.

And he got scolded again.

Besides that, the Landlord has a bike that he bought for his grandson a long time ago. But the grandson never used it. So I saw it in the back yard, just catching dust and with flat tires, and I asked: If I fix it, can I use it?

And the landlord said: Yeah, sure, I bought it for the kid like a year ago, but he never used it. That´s why it’s just lying there. I was planning on selling it even. So, go ahead.

This is annoying.

So I started using it, and guess what? Suddenly, after a few days of me using it, the grandson REALLY wanted to use the goddam bike too.

I fixed the tires, oiled the chain, cleaned it, and even bought a bike lock for it.

And one day he said he needed it and took it to the 2nd floor.

I never go to the second floor, so I asked him to please give me the bike lock back. And he did. After 3 days of me asking for it… :/

This is so weird!

And to top it all off, he got pretty annoyed with me repeatedly asking him to give it back, and on day 3 he said: ¨Yeah, it’s out there¨ (pointed at the back yard)

I asked( Annoyed at this point): Where?

Irritated, he replied: Out there, if you use your eyes and look for it, you will see it.

I said: Seriously? And I went out there to look for it. And I found it hidden in some plants.

How frustrating!

Why did he do this instead of simply giving it back to me? I don´t know. But that´s how that happened. He was lying is his grandparents’ couch on the 1st floor when this conversation took place.

Not to mention, he actually broke the bike after a couple of days of using it. And wanted me to pay for the repairs saying: ¨You used it more time, so it was probably worn down already because of you.¨

I answered with: Well, it was fine when I was using it. So, I´m not gonna pay for it, it´s your bike after all, isn’t it?

There are other problems.

He has done minor things besides all of this, like eating some fruit that I bought, grabbing eggs from my egg carton to make his breakfast, or grabbing my orange juice from his grandparents’ fridge.( The egg carton and orange juice had my name on it, so there is no way he got confused)

He has also put his phone in front of my face, while I am cooking or eating, to ¨Show me something Cool, ¨ even though I told him I did not want to see it.

The last thing he did was call me ¨honey¨ or ¨darling, ¨ a couple of times. And at first, I though he was talking on the phone or something when saying that, but then he would say something like: ¨Hey, I´m talking to you. ¨

And at first I was very confused, but when I realized he was referring to me I told him: ¨Dude, that’s weird as hell, don´t call me that. I don´t know if you are, I don´t care if your friends call you that. But you don´t call me that¨

The grandson’s grandmother took his side.

So in that moment, I decided I had had enough and followed with saying: As a matter of fact, I don´t want you touching any of my belongings again, or getting close to my room again, or even talking to me again. Don´t talk to me again, don´t come close to me again. ( This happened on Friday 05th last week)

Today (Monday 09th) he complained to his grandmother about what I said to him, and he told her: At some point, I´m gonna talk to him. It´s impossible to live in the same house and not talk.

And his grandmother seems to agree with him, and tried to tell me that I should talk to him.

The thing is…We don´t live in the same house! He lives upstairs. I don´t want to associate myself with him. I really don´t understand why he even comes down to the 1st floor so often.

I did tell her that, and she seemed to be hurt by what I said. But…That´s not my problem.

Here are some details about where everyone lives in the house.

I think I must explain the layout of the house, so that you understand why these interactions happen in the first place.

It´s a 2-floor building. The grandparents and I live on floor #1. The grandson and his mother( Whom I have seen but never spoken to) live on floor #2.

I have my own room and my own bathroom; the bathroom is outside my room.

The grandparents have their own room and bathroom separate from mine. In between us, there is another (Empty) room and the laundry room. But their room and bathroom are still connected to the rest of the building.

There is some shared space.

I share the kitchen, Laundry room, dining table, and living room with them ( Not a problem since I spend most of my time at work)

And since the grandson has always lived upstairs, he probably feels that the first floor is also a part of his house and that he can enter whenever he wants.

Conclusion: I know I have to leave. But that would mean getting a new place to rent. And that is going to take time.

He has a theory about why his brother never had these problems.

My brother never had these problems when he was here. We think because he had a different schedule from mine, and he was rarely at the house when the grandson was at the house. My brother would also mostly eat outside or order food. So he would not use the kitchen much.

I prefer to cook. And several of these interactions have occurred when I am cooking.

I have seriously considered pressing charges for harassment if this continues. I just don´t know against whom? The mother? The grandson?

If I do press charges, am I a jerk for this?

The grandson is clearly the problem here, and the problem is not that he’s in the kitchen. His words, actions and creepy behavior are all enough to make anyone want to get out of there.

Let’s see if Reddit agrees.

Pressing charges? Not necessary. If he leaves, he’ll be fine. The grandparents will probably understand.

It sounds like the grandson may need some mental help. His behavior is not acceptable, and he may scare off anyone else who lives there.

I feel bad for the grandparents.
