Imagine working from home during the day, but you have neighbors who work at night and are awake while you’re trying to sleep.

It’s pretty easy to see the problem here, right? They’re probably annoyed that you’re making noise during the day when they’re trying to sleep, and you’d probably be annoyed at any noise they make at night while you’re trying to sleep.

How do you solve this problem?

I have noisy neighbors.

We live in a condo in a mid-rise building.

I work remotely and I’m a 9to5er and they are nocturnal.

We naturally disturb each other but when I do it it’s not with any malice and it’s during the day.

She thinks the neighbors are being loud on purpose.

They go out of their way to make noises at night to disturb my sleep.

I have approached my building management with countless examples (recordings) and they do not want to get involved & often times dismiss my accusations despite the evidence.

The biggest excuse is that the current noise policy is very lax and needs to be revised.

I don’t disagree with this but at the same time I am getting fed up.

Any suggestions on what to do? There is a meeting to discuss revising the noise policy to protect 9to5ers. what if the revisions do not do enough?

The video evidence I mention above has been taken when I was awakened by my neighbors & doesn’t capture the full extent of their behavior. I would like to buy a device that (a) records video & (b) has a decibel meter built in. I am not very tech savy but any suggestions would be appreciated.

That sounds very frustrating, but I wouldn’t be surprised if her neighbors aren’t actually trying to be loud at night.

I really doubt that the neighbors are trying to be extra loud to annoy her. Everything seems louder when you’re trying to sleep. I wonder if a white noise machine at night would help.

She could try talking to the neighbors about the noise, but there may not be much they can do if they are on the opposite schedule as she is.

Moving is another option, but hopefully it doesn’t have to come to that. However, if she can’t live with the noise, it might be her only choice.
