Man Paid For Gas And Drove His Girlfriend Almost Every Day, But She Stopped Speaking To Him When He Asked Her To Return The Favor

Doing something out of love shouldn’t quietly turn into an unspoken obligation, but that’s exactly what happened in this story.
One man had been driving his girlfriend around almost constantly, paying for gas the entire time, despite her having a car available through her dad whenever she needed it.
He finally asked her to drive just once, offering to take over for the rest of the day the moment she arrived.
But instead of agreeing to this perfectly reasonable proposal, she claimed exhaustion and then escalated into a full argument over the request.
Now she’s not speaking to him at all, over something that started as a simple favor.

AITA for not picking up my girlfriend in my own car when she could use her father’s car instead?
I drive my girlfriend around in my car pretty much 99% of the time.
I don’t mind driving her, but I’ve been spending a lot of money on gas, and lately it’s started to bother me that I’m almost always the one driving.
It’s not like his girlfriend lacks the means to drive.
She has permission to use her father’s car whenever she wants, which means she doesn’t have to pay for gas at all (even her father noticed I always drive, and he tells her to pick me up in his car at least once in a while so I don’t have to pay for gas).
So he finally asks her to start picking up more of the slack.
So I asked her if, just this once, she could take her father’s car and come pick me up instead.
I even told her that once she got to my place, I’d drive us wherever we needed to go, so she wouldn’t have to drive for the rest of the day.
But his girlfriend always has a convenient excuse at the ready.
She usually tells me she’s too tired whenever I ask her to come pick me up, even though she has access to her father’s car.
This time, the conversation sparked a bitter argument.
This time, when I brought it up, not only did she say she’s too tired, she got really upset and started arguing with me.
Now she’s angry at me and isn’t speaking to me.
Part of him can see where she’s coming from, but the other half feels like he’s doing more than his fair share.
I understand that if she’s genuinely tired, she shouldn’t have to drive, and I’m not trying to force her to. But at the same time, I feel like it’s fair to ask her to do it once when I do almost all of the driving and pay for the gas without ever telling her to split with me (we’re both 20, still live with our parents, still in university).
So, AITA for asking her to pick me up this one time instead of always being the one who drives?
This relationship has been quite unbalanced for some time now.
What did Reddit have to say?
Maybe it’s time to start thinking long and hard about whether this relationship is still serving his needs.

This user thinks he needs to make it clear this is chiefly a financial concern.

This user would never stand for this kind of childish behavior.

This commenter thinks things could stand to get much worse if he doesn’t do something about this attitude now.

Ultimately, this man isn’t asking for much here. Just one drive after months of sheltering both the labor and the cost is pretty darn reasonable, but still, his girlfriend didn’t see it that way.
If she didn’t have access to a car, that would be one thing, but clearly her biggest barrier is just her unwillingness to return a favor to her boyfriend.
If she doesn’t start learning how to compromise, the writing could be on the wall for this relationship.
