Oftentimes the smallest miscommunications end up revealing the biggest cracks in a relationship. One woman found that out after a simple dessert order got mixed up on a date, resulting in double the pieces she’d actually asked for.

She tried calling the waitress over to fix the confusion, but her fiancé stopped her, claiming the whole situation was her fault before she even got the chance to explain. She clarified the order anyway, stayed polite the entire time, and even ended up with a discount for the trouble.

Later, her fiancé brought the moment back up, accusing her of unfairly blaming the waitress instead of simply admitting she’d communicated poorly.

A dessert mix-up somehow turned into a much bigger argument about who was really in the wrong.

AITAH for telling the waitress that I ordered wrong?

Me and my fiancé went on a date. The dessert options were 4 pieces of small custard cakes or 4 pieces of red bean cakes.

I asked the waitress, “Instead of doing 4 pieces, can we do 2 custard and 2 red bean?”

The waitress brought 8 pieces of custard and 8 pieces of red bean.

She wanted to be direct about the issue, but her fiancé disagreed.

When I wanted to call the waitress to clarify, my fiancé stopped me from calling her.

I asked why, and he said, “I knew this would happen. It is your fault.” I told him that this is just a miscommunication and we should let the waitress know.

So she decided to call the waitress over anyway.

I called the waitress and said, “I’m so sorry, there has been a mistake. I wanted 2 pieces of custard and 2 pieces of red bean, not 2 x 4 pieces of custard and 2 x 4 pieces of red bean.”

The waitress apologized and offered to take half of the dessert off the check. I was grateful for that, and wanted to make sure that we tip her well.

Still, her fiancé decided to interpret this in the worst possible way.

I don’t remember how the subject was brought up (I think we were talking about how much to tip or something), but my fiancé told me that the misordering was my fault and I should not have called the waitress to blame her.

I told him that was not me blaming her, I just wanted to communicate to her that there was a mistake. I wasn’t demanding a refund, I was just trying to problem-solve. I wasn’t mean or blaming her either, I was nice and polite to her.

The two just can’t come to an agreement about this.

But the fiancé insists that I blamed her for nothing, that the waitress should have told me, “You should communicate better,” in return rather than giving us a partial refund for the dessert.

AITAH? Did I deserve that? Was it called for that my fiancé would give me such a slight? Or does he not know the difference between communication and blame?

Sounds like this couple should have been able to quickly move on from this small misunderstanding.

There’s a clear difference between blame and clarification.

Politely flagging a mistake to a waitress isn’t blame; it’s just how restaurants function when orders go sideways.

She said sorry before she even explained the problem, which is the opposite of how someone acts when they’re trying to throw a server under the bus. Her fiancé skipping straight to “this is your fault” before she’d said a single word says a lot more about him than about her communication skills.

Getting a discount and a good tip out of the exchange isn’t exactly the outcome of someone being unreasonable.

With this kind of communication, this couple may not last much longer.
