When you live in a townhome, condo or house that has an HOA, there are certain things the HOA will pay for and certain things you as the homeowner would be expected to pay for. Unfortunately, there can be some gray area.

In this story, one townhome owner really thinks the HOA should’ve paid the bill to have the mold removed from the walls, but at the very least, he thinks they owe him at least a partial payment for the drywall.

I had mold in the drywall my townhouse from a backed up gutter that the HOA claimed they weren’t responsible for bc the gutter was previously fixed and the old owner didn’t claim any damage.

After six months of anguish I finally got the mold removed and was scheduled for drywall replacement (ALL out of pocket).

But there was another issue.

There was electrical wiring issues for my unit the HOA miraculously decided to fix.

The contractor opened up holes in my wall to fix the wiring, in the same room that needed drywall repair.

My drywall company came and patched up the drywall and what the electrical ppl ripped out, assuming that was also work that they were contracted for.

The area the electrical guy was responsible for was about 1/5 the size of the rest of the project.

The HOA’s decision really doesn’t make sense.

Found out from the HOA that they had only requested work for the electrical wiring, but never the drywall repair afterwards? (Because they’re idiots?)

I asked them if they had any intentions to repair drywall from their own work with no response.

Am I entitled to a partial refund from my drywall cost since they patched up stuff the HOA is responsible for?

So, was the HOA just planning to leave a hole in the wall if OP didn’t pay for the drywall himself?

I really think the HOA should’ve paid for the mold removal. Just because the last owner didn’t complain doesn’t mean it’s not the HOA’s responsibility. The last owner may not have known the mold existed.

At the very least, the HOA should pay for part of the drywall repair, but dealing with this HOA sounds like a nightmare.
