He Did His Friend A Favor — Then Was Annoyed By How His Friend Responded When He Needed Cash For A Ride Home

Imagine going over to a friend’s house to help them with something, and they were also paying you back for something you bought for them. If you didn’t have enough money for a ride home, would you expect them to pay for that expense in addition to the money they already paid you?
In this story, one man is in this exact situation, and yes, he does seem to expect his friend to not only pay him back for the purchase he made but also pay for his ride home. His friend doesn’t see it that way, and it led to an argument that neither of them intended.

AITAH for asking my friend about a small money detail that felt off to me?
A friend of mine wanted to buy a specific electronic item and asked me to handle the whole thing for him since I know more about it.
I ordered it, made sure it worked, then went over to his place later to set it up.
When I was done, he paid me back. He happened to pay in cash, which was fine.
Here’s where he was confused by his friend’s suggestion.
While I was getting ready to leave, I needed to book a ride, but I could not use my normal payment methods at that moment and I did not have enough cash on me. The amount I needed was small enough that I assumed he would spot me, since we are friends and it was just a minor hiccup.
Instead, before I could figure out what to do, he told me to take the amount I needed out of the cash he had just handed me for the item.
It was not a huge deal, but it definitely caught me off guard.
Mixing those two things together felt unusual, and if I am being honest, it rubbed me the wrong way a bit. Not enough to bring it up in the moment, but enough that it stayed on my mind afterward because it is not something I would expect most people to do.
He later decided to talk to his friend about it.
Later on, I tried to bring it up in a light, low key way, basically just to understand where he was coming from. I was not accusing him of anything. I was more confused than anything else.
He took it kind of badly.
He said he did not expect our friendship to get so focused on small sums of money and made it sound like I was being overly materialistic.
He didn’t mean it that way at all.
That was not my intention at all. I was just trying to talk about something that felt off to me.
Now I am wondering if I should have just let it go completely, or if it was reasonable to ask about something that bothered me even if the amount itself was small.
AITAH?
I probably would’ve just let it go. Unless his friend was expected to give him a ride home or pay for his transportation, I don’t think it’s a big deal for his friend to not expect to have to cover that expense.

It sounds like he expected his friend to give him extra money for a ride home, which was not part of their deal. He had money. He paid for his own ride home. It’s really a non-issue. He’s the only one making it an issue. He needs to drop it.
