“I Made a Huge Mistake”: Tenant’s Petty Payback Escalates Apartment Noise Nightmare Beyond Control

It can be really annoying when you have a really loud neighbor in an apartment.

What would you do if your upstairs neighbors were always stomping, moving furniture, and just being really loud throughout most of the day?

That is what happened to the family in this story, so they started playing loud music and making other noise as revenge, but that only caused the neighbors to be even louder. Now they are looking for ideas on how they can get the neighbors to stop being so loud.

Personally, I think they made a mistake by being loud themselves, and instead they should start by talking to the neighbors. Read through the full story and see if you agree.

Terrified to report my loud upstairs neighbors to the manager. Advice needed!

I (19) female and my mom (37) have recently moved into a new apartment complex that’s a downstairs unit.

Sounds like a great place to live.

Before moving in, we met the owners. A older lady from Monterey Mexico (we’re also Mexican, anyways) and her son and daughter. Due to us being Mexican lol, Señora M has made it obvious that she REALLY takes a liking to us.

Always smiling and starting up conversations with us! Her daughter being very attentive to our concerns as well! As we were touring our now apartment it was completely SILENT.

We decided, okay! This is the perfect place for us, we’re in downtown, not too far from my dad, super close to work and school!!

Apartment living has its own little quirks.

Fast forward 3-4 weeks after, we officially move in! The first few days, there wasn’t really any noise but as we started to bring more things in, we would hear little noises from upstairs.

I’d like to say that (me) my mom have NEVER lived in an apartment complex before. Our whole lives we lived cramped with family, so we understand. I’d also like to say that I dormed last year for college so AGAIN, I know what apartment complexs are like.

A certain level of noise is normal in an apartment.

Anyways, my mom was taken aback from the noises, but I simply reminded her that we’re living in an apartment complex now. There’s going to be noises, normal noises, like maybe some walking, stuff dropping, maybe some moving around and stuff, beds creaking- stuff like that.

We’ve only seen our upstairs neighbors maybe twice. It’s a family, husband, wife and their 3 kids. So, we understand that they’re going to be a bit rowdy. (We lived with family so again, we understand- especially with the kids).

Little kids can make a lot of noise.

Not even the 2nd week of living here, we kept hearing the little girl stomping around, and yes we know it’s the little girl because the 1st week we were moving stuff from the garage into the house and we heard running footsteps coming down from the stairs.

We minded our business as the little girl threw some trash away, but as she was walking back she just stared at us- as she was staring at us she went up the stairs stomping HEAVY as heck. I joked with my mom “Wow, now we know who keeps stomping around.”

Those sound like normal apartment noises.

Fast forward, to now I guess? We regularly hear them getting up and ready at 8am TO 11:30AM. ALMOST 4 hours. Just Running, stomping REALLY heavy, it sounds like they’re literally dragging heavy furniture around. Just being RODWY.

Then they’re gone until like 5pm, then it’s the same thing again. They slam doors heavy as heck, make really loud noises. My mom and I agreed that we’ll just let it slide as we don’t want to cause any problems.

If the noise is excessive, they have to notify the manager.

Fast forward to like last week to now, we’re really considering contacting the manger (he’s adding grass to our backyard for our dog, he always knocks and we talk a bit before we do our own thing. So we know each other well enough.)

The worst thing is? They have progressively gotten worse, again it’s the running, stomping, pounding, sounds like they’re dragging furniture around!? And slamming doors. It’s obvious completely not our business to know what they do up there BUT WHAT DO THEY DO UP THERE TO CAUSE ALL THIS NOISE????

If they haven’t even talked to the neighbors, this seems a bit aggressive.

Just last week we basically gave up on being fair and started to be petty. As soon as they wake up and are stomping around, again sounds like furniture is moving, we literally blast music up until they leave.

They sometimes stop when they hear the music or get louder. The louder they get, the louder I turn the music up. The quieter they get, I lower the music just a tad bit.

Things can sound loud in a nextdoor apartment, even when it is not intentional.

We have started to quickly notice that they have started stomping much harder on purpose, just being louder on purpose now. MIND YOU. They. Make. Noise. All. Day. They be banging on the wall, maybe even kicking idk but when we make the tiniest bit of noise they bang the wall.

Like a few hours before I wrote this, it’s was barely 11pm, they were still up because- again, the stomping. We were building my desk and chair, but we weren’t making any noise I’d say because we weren’t being loud as it’s night and we don’t want to be THAT petty.)

This really seems like a situation where the neighbors truly don’t realize how loud things are.

We had to move a book shelf I have with a bunch of manga and figures so we were being extra careful. Barely making any noise. Then all of a sudden we hear a LOUD bangs on the wall.

We stop what we’re doing and we realized it was one of the kids to get us to shut up so ofc I yell “ALL OF A SUDDEN, (I said this part a bit quieter but still in a yell) BUT ITS OKAY WHEN YOU MAKE NOISE, OHH OKAY” obviously my mom told me to shut up lol.

They should have

But, ever since last week, we have been blasting music, singing loudly, making the same noises that they make, and groaning loudly when they start their ruckus. It’s definitely on purpose now.

Me and my mom are fed up, but we can’t just break lease as we JUST moved in and it’s very expensive. We want to talk to the manager about this issue but we know that if we say anything, they’re obviously going to give them a warning/talk..

Do they have any reason to think that the neighbors would do something like this?

We’re afraid of them retaliating even more. I have a maltipoo (2 years old) and we let him outside sometimes (not too long because it’s too hot just enough for him to go peepee and poopoo) and we’re scared that they’re going to start going onto their patio and just throw stuff down at him/at our stuff. (Yeah, we overthink a lot)

We talked about waiting till school starts up again to see if they’ll continue with this madness. Again, I’ve dormed with 6 other girls and had upstairs neighbors. I KNOW and UNDERSTAND noises, but they’re just being little poopyheads bro.

Honestly, I don’t know that I can blame that family for not liking them.

The kids (the little girl (8-12) and the boy (13-15) are old enough to know what they’re doing. I don’t care how old or young you are- you KNOW what you’re doing.

AND THE MOM. BRO. She doesn’t tell them ANYTHING. She lets them BE. We’re positive that the mom doesn’t like us because of us becoming petty and her repeatedly dogging (giving dirty looks) my mom.

Why not try talking to them?

I genuinely don’t know what to do. I hope to get a few people’s opinions because we genuinely don’t know what to do anymore.

Continue being petty or let it be for a year. Hopefully this gets some attention because I really need to see other people’s perspectives.

They are willing to try anything except the right thing.

I admittedly do feel bad sometimes.

That at our grown age we’re being petty but then again, we aren’t going to let them walk all over us.

While I can certainly understand the frustration and the desire to be petty, they really need to take a step back and try just talking. If the neighbors won’t change, then go through the landlord.

This is exactly what I was thinking.

Revenge is rarely an effective way to get your neighbors to do what you want. Hopefully, she has not burned any bridges already, but I think if she just talks to the neighbors, she might be able to fix things.

Explain that she was being rude, but the neighbors are being louder than they realize. If all goes well, everyone can enjoy a quieter place to live.
