A Customer’s Joke About The Store’s Music Turned Into A Stranger’s Political Correctness Rant — Until The Cashier Shut It Down

You never really know what you’ll encounter on a late-night grocery run.
One woman found this to be true while doing her weekly shopping at a 24-hour supermarket after work.
The customer in front of her had forgotten an item, so she was forced to wait as he ran to grab it. To make time pass by faster, the cashier made a joke about the song playing over the speakers.
When the customer came back, he misunderstood the conversation and jumped in with his own opinion.
That’s when the cashier gave him a response he didn’t expect.
Read on to see what he said.
Cashier: “Or we could all just not be ********?”
I’m a female and work hospitality hours (pre-COVID, I did anyway), so I’d finish my working week at midnight on Sunday and do my weekly grocery shopping on the way home.
So it’s about 1:30 a.m. on a Monday morning at a 24-hour supermarket, and I’ve finished my shopping and am waiting with my basket at the checkout behind the one other shopper in the store.
I’m kind of zoning out, listening to the retro music piped through the store speakers, rolling my eyes at the trashy magazine covers, and checking out which confections are half-price this week (because who can pass up a chocolate bargain, right?).
The guy in front of her was taking his sweet time.
The guy checking out is umm-ing and uhh-ing over almost everything he puts on the conveyor. Once his last item is finally scanned, he cries out, “Oh! I forgot my something-or-other sauce! Where is it?”
The cashier points to the nearest aisle and directs the guy, who at first runs to the wrong aisle until the cashier calls out and directs him correctly again.
The cashier, who knows me as he’s the only one serving when I do my grocery shop every week, greets me and says, “Well, he’s doing something wrong if he has to steal kisses in the first place.”
At first, she wasn’t sure what he meant.
I obviously looked as puzzled as I felt at this remark, and he points towards the speakers in the ceiling, and I realise the current song is playing through the chorus of “and I always have to steal my kisses from you.”
The cashier repeats, “Yep, he’s definitely doing something dodgy if he can only get them by stealing,” and I laugh and agree with him, just as the first customer returns with his forgotten item.
The customer must have caught the tail end of the sentence and thought he was the topic of discussion, as he turns defensive and asks what we’re talking about while he slaps down his some-such sauce on the conveyor.
Apparently, this guy didn’t find anything wrong with that behavior.
The cashier tells the customer that we’re talking about the song and how it’s not appropriate to steal kisses from people who obviously don’t want to give them.
The guy then replies with, “There’s not really anything wrong with that. I think maybe we all just need to stop being so politically correct these days.”
Now, I don’t know what my face was doing upon hearing that, but the brilliant cashier’s immediate response to this guy was, “Or maybe we could all just stop being ********?” through the most convincing of customer service smiles.
At this point, the customer didn’t really have any words.
The customer paused for a moment of thought, then paid and collected his groceries without another word as the cashier bid him a good morning.
I put my basket on the conveyor and smiled as I agreed wholeheartedly with the cashier while he scanned my items, and I remarked how that night’s playlist had a distinctly ’90s vibe to it.
To “Mac,” who always worked the Sunday night shift at “Foles,” if you’re reading this, I hope you and your family are doing okay, and the customers are treating you right through these crappy, crappy times.
Nice! And it sounds like “Mac” was really onto something.
Let’s take a look at how the fine folks over at Reddit feel about this interaction.
That sounds pretty true.

This reader offers a song title.

For this reader, you get nothing but terrible music at “Foles.”

That’s actually really cute!

Well, the cashier certainly knew how to end that conversation.
The customer probably expected everyone to agree with him, but that clearly wasn’t happening.
And really, the cashier was on-point. There’s a difference between being “politically correct” and just treating people with basic respect.
The good news is that the guy seemed to get the message because he didn’t have much to say after that.
