Choosing a roommate is a big decision, and not one you should rush through, or it can cause you problems for the life of your lease.

That seems to be what the guy in this story is facing since the roommate he picked turned out to be very lazy and won’t do a thing to help get the apartment ready to live in.

Even the one task that was specifically assigned to the roommate didn’t get done on time, which left them without WiFi for several days.

Overall, this seems like a very frustrating situation that he will have to deal with for some time. Read through the full story below and see how you think he should handle it.

How do you all get your flatmates to actually do some work?

He and I are friends.

Picking a roommate is very difficult.

I chose to get a place together because he is typically known as a massive Type A person in our circle (I was the last/newest addition to the circle).

That’s kinda how I am as well, so I figured it would be a good fit and the house would stay neat & tidy, and everything won’t fall onto me.

His roommate is already lazy, and they haven’t even moved in yet.

Except… I was the one going for all the viewings. I was the one talking to the property manager for everything. I was the one who ensures all the electric logistics, water stuff, etc.

He wasn’t doing anything at all, and somebody had to do it. The only thing I left on him entirely, rather I really pushed on him, was to figure out the wifi stuff.

What is this guy even doing?

We didn’t have any wifi in our apartment for three days after moving in, because he was so slow with figuring out and just placing an order.

I ended up having to sort that out too, figure out which one to get etc, and all he had to do was place an order and he took a good chunk of time for that too (I had him place the order because I didn’t want another thing that was on my name and being managed end to end by me).

Things won’t change unless they force it.

There are some repairs needed in the flat, and it’s still me constantly talking & emailing the manager, even though we’re both on the same email threads!

Choosing furniture, ensuring things get washed/changed out, etc all of it is constantly me. And oh, did I mention he is a full 5 years older (aka 30!) than me?

Unfortunately, it seems like the roommate is more than willing to just sit back and let him handle everything, and that isn’t going to change without it being directly addressed.

Let’s see what the people in the comments have to say about this all-too-common situation.

Unfortunately, this is exactly right.

Unfortunately, he has a very immature roommate.

A bad roommate can make life miserable. He cannot let this continue without discussing it directly, or nothing will change.

Unfortunately, the only way to get lazy people like this to do things is to force it.
